Heated Gear
« on: September 05, 2023, 10:41:12 PM »

If you are not inclined to hard wire a 12V supply from the bike for heated gear (gloves, vests, etc.), this battery is an excellent choice for a power supply.

The prices on those things are just obnoxious.  Shop around, there are plenty of 12 volt packs that may be a lot less costly.  some of them call themselves phone charging units.  It's 12volt but they have a built in USB  to draw it down to the 5 volt needed.

I did NOT do a thorough search, just typed in a keyword and grabbed a few items of interest. but as an example.
Here are a few things on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09RST2Y6D

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08THCNNCS/

are  just two items that popped up on amazon.   Of course you will need to do your own research to find a device that works for you but shop around, stuff IS out there possibly cheaper.  Note: generally you DO get what you pay for, so if it's made of high quality Chineesium for 16 dollars, well, consider the source carefully.  Unfortunately a lot of places, if you can put the word Bike or Boat on an item, they'll triple the price on you :(

Fanttik is another company that might have something as well.

The12V  heated gear requires 12-14V output and about 10amp continuous if you are running a full set.

I have been using the gerbing battery, but it does not put out enough juice for a whole outfit.

On ICE bikes the bike's battery and charging system provides plenty of power close to 14v while the motor is running but the Energica will only give 12V from a tap.

Yeah, at 30% off, it's only a little over double what it should cost.  You also don't need anything this complicated; I took a generic RC car battery pack and made it a portable power source for my wife's heated gear, to use when off the bike.  I never measured it carefully, but it was good for a few hours.  She never ran it on full power though.  Of course, you need a charger, which we already had for our RC toys.  But they are cheap too.

Good option, but you would need 3 of those to get the 18000 mAh capacity of the antigravity unit.

No, actually, one of those has much more power than the Antigravity.  You're looking at a number that is misleading, on purpose.  They are lying about the true power.  What you have to look at is the watt-hours, not the milliamp rating.  That is in the fine print, and it's 59.2Wh.  The RC batteries have over 90 watt hours (14.8v times 6.5 amp hours).

What's the lie?  They state the milliamp total for all the cells at 4v, which is not how the unit operates electrically.

Thank you.  Missed that entirely.

EVERYONE tells this lie, so not surprised that it wouldn't be clear.  I've been into all kinds of battery-related hobbies for a long time and know what to look for.  There are around 80 various lipo batteries in my house right now.

THey all lie, and I think the cheaper shittier batteries push it harder to get you to buy their crap when you do not know what you are looking at.  Just like when 1080 P first came out,  everyone SCREAMED 1080P !!!!  but conveniently didn't list the bandwidth of the device, which was terrible and guaranteed blockiness on all but the stillest of scenes.

Look for watt hours of the battery device for overall power density.  Also, count on about 20 percent of that power not being usable, well you can but fully cycling lipo's, especially the higher C rated ones, tears the shit out of them, many of them are not the greatest specs to begin with for cycles.

At least if it catastrophically fails, you'll get some warning to hunk it on the side of the road before it vents / flames out.  Is that a bulging lipo in your pocket or are you happy to see me?

I used Gerbing battery powered gloves on my Ribelle since I didn’t want to try and tap into the 12v circuit. They worked great for my daily commute (about an hour each way) but I can’t speak to their effectiveness on longer rides. I think Gerbing also has battery powered vests as well but it’s probably best to check their website to make sure.

swampnut, I recycle lipo's  and yah tearing them apart can be real fun if you didn't discharge it properly.  Many of them I would put in the yard and shoot, let them vent, then after the cooling. go grab the copper out of them.  If it was undamaged, just old or swollen, Id freeze, then take apart to preserve the copper and lith sheets separately, keep the lith in mineral oil and there IS a market for it if you know where to look.  You can unwind primary cells too but again, be careful, shorts are bad things, especially on a 200 C  RC car battery, but generally if you short, it pops and blows the fault clear.
