SR/F 2019 OBC now half power
« on: July 19, 2023, 06:27:01 PM »

Just got bike back from dealer, all updated.
Unfortunately the single phase charging has slowed- used to be 2.3kW, now 1.2kW
So charger not failed but half power.

Anyone know if this is software thing or a duff charger?
thanks pete.

I assume the 2.3Kw was on 220v?  Sounds like 120v charging at 1.2KW.  Strange.

chargers typically don't degrade like that, they just BTFU.

Are you giving it a full 220 - 240 volts to charge on?   For the KW to half like that, it sounds like the  voltage halved.

How many amps is it pulling? Check the settings to make sure you didn't accidentally slide the max amps down, if that's possible, and check the voltage coming in, make sure its 240 not 115

isn't there a Botton (with LED) on the type 2 connector to be able to select the amps?

The selector is on the granny charger - hold the button down and it goes into a selector mode and can switch between 2.2kW, 1.5kW, and 600w or something (I forget the exact values) - same thing happened to me, I accidentally held the button down and downgraded the charge rate. Not a very user-friendly "UX" and considering the cable is over £200 you'd think they could afford at least a legend near the button to tell you what it does...

What SOC did you start the charge at?  See if it does the same when you start the charge at around 40% SOC. I noticed on my 2017 Zeros if I start the charge at 80% SOC it will only be a 2KW charge with 8KW worth of chargers. But it will charge at a much higher rate at 80% SOC if the chargers are started a 40% and then wait for it to get to the same 80% SOC without the charging being interrupted near 80% SOC.

The first time I tried to charge at a high SOC, I thought something was wrong with the chargers, but that was not the case. I know one other who experienced the same thing on a stock 2021 Zero SR/S, so perhaps it happens on all Zeros when the charge is started at a high SOC %. I have no idea why it happens, just that it does happen.

Thanks guys. DomTom I think you've nailed it. I got  the following back from the dealer, which basically said I should check the charge rate away from 0% (which is what i got back home on) and it was most likely a software limit as I tried both Zero's and my Granny charger on 240V (UK) single phase and got the same 1.2kW on the dash:

"Might be worth trying at a charge station capable of 22kw+ and puts out 3phase…. Try this around 30% SOC if possible.   Yes, the whole 97% “full” is down the current faults will all HM batteries, changing to BCB will resolve this issue.   I’ve not seen a charger half work, it either pushes current or doesn’t really… I maybe wrong on that, but we can do some test here with the laptop and see all voltage/amps in, then voltage/amps out…for each charger.
It’s a shame Zero do not really give us any patch notes on what the updates are “improving” but charge rates/curves are always being monitored.   We are here if you need us." They are called Davant in Torquay, Devon, UK

I'll use the bike until its around 30% then plug in and see what its taking.  Let you know.

Dude, it's the Zero granny charger setting. Hold the button.

There are other things that will slow the charge rate such as too high or too low of a battery temperature. If way too high or way too low it will not charge at all. But when you're comfortable with the temperature, the battery should charge at its best. I do not know what effect, if any, temperature has on the weird 80% SOC charging issue I mentioned in the previous message. But I noticed it happening on a nice comfortable day.
