BMW introduces their ConnectedRide HUD Smartglasses
« on: July 08, 2023, 07:55:48 PM »

BMW has announced that they will be marketing their new ConnectedRide HUD Smartglasses in the U.S. later this year. They will be able to pair with new BMW motorcycle models (including the CE 04 and CE 02?) and feature a heads-up display on the right lens. The price in Europe is about $757. The U.S. price will be announced in the future. People are idiots as it is, especially these last two gens.  They have a hard time swinging their arms and chewing gum w/o running into light posts.  Giving them something else to distract them while driving. oh just great.  Even though it's right 'in front' of them you still have to focus on the item, and I can't see half these NFC's being able to multi task that very effectively.

I can see the, Im not responsible for anything, it's the worlds fault lawsuit right now.
It's not MY fault, the hud got in the way, I didn't see the child on the sidewalk I wandered up onto, so sue BMW, don't blame Meeeeeee!!!

very cool concept of course!! but just like with jet fighter pilots.  Not everyone gets to be one, you  need to PROVE you are smart, agile, and capable of handling that amount of sensory inputs and tasking before they trust you with the neat toys.  Now we are going to hand out these high cerebral utilization tools to anyone?  good luck with that!

It's less distracting that looking down at the dash or a phone mounted on the handlebars. If people want to be idiots then they'll find a way, you can't just take everything away to protect everyone. Also your eyes have to refocus to see the HUD, your eyes can't even focus on something so close. It will use optics so it appears to be further away, the same way a VR headset does so it doesn't feel like you're looking at a screen an inch from your face.

How is that going to work on a bright sunny day Id be curious to see.  Even then, if you are focusing on reading words whether they are on a screen in front of you or floating at some arbitrary horizon in front of you, you are focusing on the words NOT the rest of the surrounding.  YES ideally you should see hazards behind them and re focus back thru the words and on the hazard but, well...

I can see it now, some clown is going to wreck because he has porn hub on his hud.   :o

I don't get why you're so adamant to make this a bad thing. It's not for reading novels, it's for navigation. Do you also think road signs should be taken down? And as I mentioned before, do you also think satnavs should be banned? HUDs are good progress, they allow you to see information without taking your eyes off the road. No more glancing down to check your speed, mishearing audio directions and having to look down at your phone.

until it's a bright day and you can't see it.  until the gps signal or internet signal is spotty and you are twiddling and fiddling trying to get the thing back, then again, couldn't be much worse than texting while riding or driving.  People become over dependent on devices to do everything for them, then when it's not working, they are totally lost.  People should be glancing around anyways to see their surroundings, not rely on a camera display.

I really don't think you're understanding what the device is, there is no camera feed displayed in the hud (although that would be a handy feature). It's a pair of glasses inside your helmet so it will be better shielded from the sun that your dash or a phone mounted on the bars. If you lose signal then it's no different to what happens with your phone, so you just leave it alone until the signal comes back. And if you want to control something on it then you use the controls on the handlebars, no need to be prodding away at a screen like you would with a phone.

I can understand people not being interested in something like this, but in that case simply don't buy and use it. You however are sounding like you want it banned or something, like some sort of luddite. Might as well get rid of traction control, ABS, adaptive cruise control, slipper clutches and quick shifters, all the cameras and blind spot monitoring in new cars, and so on. Let's just going back to cars and bikes from the 70s.

Like my Royal Enfield that doesn't even have a trip meter?   ;D

I never said anything about banning anything, but that you would immediately jump there to make your point .. hmm ok.

It's another gadget to further distract people who already are way too distracted when driving.

TBH, Id rather be on the road with a drunk driver than some kid texting on their phone.

At least the drunk is trying to stop, at least the drunk is trying to swerve, change lanes.. at least the drunk is aware of the problem and trying to correct it.. the clown on their phone, their tablet, whatever gadget of the week, doesn't have a clue what's going on, they are not even looking, they are too busy updating their selfie to be paying attention to what's going on in front of them.

Maybe we should all just wait 5 years and Elon will have fully self driving cars and bikes and trucks and then we can spend our entire lives absorbed online and not even have to worry about it.  Uncle Elon will save us !!

No you didn't say you want it banned, but it sounds like that's what it would take to make you happy. Do you not realise that a HUD is less distracting than having a phone mounted on your bars, or a satnav in your car? This is an improvement, and it's just for navigation and speed and maybe being able to see what song you have playing. This is nothing at all like someone driving around while on their phone texting. And just because some people may not be able to concentrate with a HUD in their field of view doesn't mean you can just assume everyone's going to be like that. If someone can't ride a bike while using a HUD then they shouldn't be on the road, they're the type to get distracted riding past a pretty girl and rear end the car in front.

It's not a particularly bad idea or anything but, er ... can I get it with varifocal lenses?

I had a look at the original link and they will have a diopter adjustment so can be used to glasses wearers. Do you need the varifocals to see your dash? I suppose it could probably be done in theory as the HUD section only takes up the upper portion of the lens, whether it could be done in practice would depend on if it's projected onto the lens or a separate optical "block" that most AR glasses seem to use (from the images it looks like the former).

Can't really see anything either close or far away any more, hence the glasses. Another "benefit" of being old...
