Motor Bearing Question - 2016 Zero SR
« on: June 05, 2022, 02:59:08 AM »

A while ago I made a post on this forum asking why my motorcycle was making a "rubbing" sound as it accelerated and I came to the conclusion that it was bad bearings in the motor. So here's my question: Is it okay if I keep riding on it regardless of the motor having bad bearings or should I be in a hurry to fix it?

Also from what I read, dealers will just replace the entire motor if it has a bad bearing. Is there anyone I can go to/send the motor to in the US that will just do a bearing replacement?

You're better off changing the bearing before it's gets bad enough for the rotor to hit the stator. Then, you actually will need a new motor. As of now, you need only a few dollars in bearings. If you can do the wrench work to get the motor out of the bike, you are probably capable of changing the bearings yourself. There aren't a bunch of moving parts like an engine. Just note the orientation of the encoder to the rotor so you can put it back in exactly the same orientation.

I just rode the thing until the bearing went out, and was able to still ride it about a half mile at 25mph - lot of grinding.

Looking about $1800 for motor if I remember, plus whatever labor, and who knows how long in the shop.

Lot of users recommended for me to take it to a professional but I didn’t have those resources.

Well, that is unfortunate. How many miles were on the bike?

Here is a photo of my totally non-magnetic motor jig.
All aluminium, 316 stainless steel and a bit of brass.
I also use it in a clean room as my workshop and yard has fine metal dust that is sure to find its way in.

First, don't keep riding it unless you want to go from needing to replace a $10 bearing to replacing a $1500+ motor. If you plan to pull the motor yourself, any shop that works on ICE engines or a machine shop will have a press or puller capable of getting the bearings out of the motor. You could even get what you need from a place like Harbor Freight for a small amount of cash. I'm assuming the bearings are either pressed into the housing or onto the shaft (onto the shaft if Zero followed the engineering logic of the rest of the world). If you don't want to have to realign the encoder, make sure you pay careful attention to its alignment should you have to remove it during the operation.

And, avoid any Heat and Hammer blows... The magnets didn't lik that.
Just smooth press and pull the bearings!

(Massive "column drill" can also help for pressing, and pull the stator!)
