Southwest USA Trip - Travel Tips?
« on: February 03, 2023, 09:22:16 PM »

Hey all, as I mentioned in some other posts I recently picked up my '23 SS9 RS and have found myself with some extra time on my hands so I cant stop myself from taking a road trip to try and find some warm weather. I will be leaving Salt Lake City and heading south towards Vegas, then down the Colorado River to Blythe, then west towards Joshua Tree National Park and LA. Depending on how this part goes Ill either continue up the CA coast or begin my loop back. With the current weather system in the US I am avoiding the frigid desert state of Nevada currently.

I've planned most of my fast charges around Electrify America and EVgo chargers so I can use the most of my purchased charging plans (this can be flexible). I was also planning to bring my EVSE with a NEMA 14-50 adapter to utilize some Level 2 Charging stops in more rural (RV) areas. I have argued with myself on bringing this or not.

I am planning my days to be ~250-350 miles when possible so I can enjoy the scenery more and fret less about charging and where I need to be. I will not be camping; planning to use hotel/motels, AirBnb, and friend's places.

I have been riding for 20 years so [I believe] I have most of the basic knowledge on what to bring etc.. With that said I wanted to open myself up to all of your internet wisdom on anything from places to go/see/stay, things to bring, and of course Energica specific tips.

Elevation is the thing to check. I am in a motorhome right now at perhaps the lowest elevation in the world where an RV may be parked. I have my Zero DS motorcycle with me. Here is the weather here for the week.

But getting here over many high mountains will be the problem.  Death Valley has J-1772 charge stations and tent camping near Furnace Creek.  Another nice place for this time of year is Organ Pipe Cactus Natl Monumnet, AZ but only a 120 VAC outlet there, which I put on Plugshare myself.

But you will have to check for charge location on Plugshare for where you're going.

I am at Salton Sea SRA. 250' below sea level.

I just reread your post and you mentioned staying in motels. I was thinking more about tent camping when I replied.

The hotels at Death Valley are very expensive, but they both have J-1772 charge stations at Furnace creek. Near OPCNM will be a lot cheaper, but will be dumpy motels. BTW, have you been to Tombstone, AZ?  West Tucson? Those are nice areas this time of year.

Ajo, AZ , close to OPCNM,  has dumpy motels for $44.00 per night and also has J-1772 charge stations nearby.

I thought I would provide an update with some comments and questions. I'm about 700 miles into my trip and just stayed in Lake Havasu City AZ. Really loving the SS9 so far. My trip started in SLC when it was 29 degrees so I have been layered up and the new (to me) key item towards persisting through that was handlebar muffs. With them I need the heated grips on the lowest setting otherwise my hands get too hot. I know folks have mentioned the stock heated grips aren't too hot but they sure work nice with muffs.

A few things/thoughts:

The ambient temp reading on the dash tends to be about 10 degrees too high. Anyone else notice this? Where is the temp sensor reading from?

I have .42 firmware and my range has been very accurate so far. I tend to ride with the 3rd screen up and watch my consumption/avg often and I have been very happy with it in contrast to some of the folks who seem to have problems with it.

I had a situation in Vegas when I was charging and a huge sleet/rain storm moved in quickly. I ended the charge to get to a sheltered area and in the process a fault came up. (C1003 - Unspecified CM Error). I then tried AC charging in a garage and the same fault was there, disallowing charging. One more stop at a DC charger gave the fault once but then it went away a second time. Not sure if moisture getting into the socket could be a problem. Any thoughts?

Have you yet decided where you're headed to?  I have been all over AZ but mostly in one of my motorhomes. It's been a while since I have been in AZ on a motorcycle.

Yeah, I am that old. :)

Don - not really actually. I have a few days to explore the LA area and then I will be looping back to Vegas to meet a friend on Sunday. Going to check out Joshua Tree and Mt. San Jacinto Parks in the next few days.

The LA area is the last area I would go to. The last time I was there, it took me a full day to get out of the traffic coming back home. These days, I make sure I never get too close to LA, even if I need to go hundreds of miles out of the way to do such. I stay as east as reasonably possible from LA, as I recently did on my RV trip to Anaz Borrego Desert State Park.

It's been many years since I have been on the Grapevine Hwy (I5 near LA). Past there is too close to LA for my liking.
