SOLVED: LPR - Cooling Fan Constantly Running?
« on: December 02, 2022, 02:03:57 PM »

Hi Folks!

As the weather turned wet and cold here in Germany I decided to try putting my Ribelle in LPR mode.
So yesterday afternoon with 45 % SOC I toggled the LPR and connected the bike to power as suggested in the owner's manual.
The bike began to charge without the display lighting up as during normal charging, but I could see on my power meter that everything was as normal.

A few hours later I saw that the charging stopped. Switching on the bike (with LPR mode still on) I saw it charged to 78 % SOC.
And as usual with normal charging the cooling fan of the 3 kW charger in the bike's rear was still running. Now, this morning this fan hasn't stopped, and I see on the power meter, the stuff is constantly drawing 50 Watt. The manual does not even mention the cooling fan of the internal charger.

According to the manual I am expected to keep the bike connected, but with the fan running this would mean consuming a bloody 1 kWh per day, or more than 30 kWh per month!
That's neither environmentally friendly nor sustainable. Does anyone have the same experience or is something wrong with my bike?
Thanks for sharing your insights!

Plus it would wear out the fan.

Do you get the same issue if you try again? What firmware version do you have?

You could see if a reboot of the system helps. Press mode and menu button at the same time for 5 seconds

Until you figure out the real issue, simply install a manual spst switch for the fan so it can be turned off at any time. It's not difficult to get to the fan wires. I replaced my fan a couple of years ago.

After the bike reaches its full charge of the LPR, it should be fine with no fan at all. Just leave it off. If it starts the charge again, it won't be charging long enough to need the fan at all to get back to the full charge of the LPR mode.

Something is wrong for fan to run continuously, is this issue fixed since dealer firmware update (phantom shut-down after 5-seconds)?

Because I want to drive to my dealer to get an update, I deactivated the LPR mode and charged the bike to full (but reaching only 97 %). Astoundingly, this time the fan stopped when charging was completed.
It appears to me that is something of a software glitch - I will rise this issue with my dealer when I am there.

Unfortunately the weather turned extremely nasty here in Germany, so I do not think I will be able to go there before the year ends  :'(
I will keep you posted.

Sounds like something is wrong. I have my Ribelle (1st gen) in LPR mode currently and the fan isn’t on. To be fair, I haven’t seen it kick on yet to charge but then again it was at 80% already when I put it in LPR mode. It’s been in LPR mode nearly a month now.

Definitely have your dealer look at it.

97% SOC at end of cell balance means there is capacity left.  Deplete pack to <95% and charge to full again and this will bump it up may have to do this 2x to hit 100%.  The healthy cells take longer to charge but the session cuts short due to some safeguard timeout or thermal limit.

ISSUE IS SOLVED!

Drove 140 km in wet conditions to my dealer yesterday and had the update (yes, I was keen to get it  ::)).

He told me that the old version somehow managed the cell balancing suboptimally, which sometimes led to a depleted cell which in turn would cause the bike to stutter a high accelerations and to less than 100 % charging. Besides that some other issues were adressed with this update.

Arrived with 22 % SOC at home, put the bike on AC and it went to 100 %. Cooling fan stopped after charging as it should. Therefore I think the issue is solved.

As an aside: Maybe the issue with the 10 % error in velocity (GPS 100 km/h, display 110 km/h) was adressed as well. On my way back a had a difference of between 3-5 km/h only. But my GPS behaved a bit erratically, so I am not 100 % sure. Will take some time until I can move the bike again because it's raining and it's cold now. Plus I need to clean the bike (will take me days  :P)
But I will keep you posted.

I am glad that the new software version has solved the problems you had. I will ask my dealer about the update as well. Was it free of charge for you?

Highly interested in your findings. Do not take too much time to clean your bike. Dressed up rebels are a no go ;).

Yes, the update was free of charge.
As it rectifies some technical issues this should be covered by the warranty.

Testing if the speedometer reading is more realistic now will take some time, because weather is bad for riding. I will keep you posted.

Personally I like rebels more of the clean look like Zorro 😎
