My esse esse 9 is on the way over from California
« on: October 12, 2022, 07:27:21 AM »

I put down the deposit on July 9th. Today I was emailed letting me know that the bike will be shipped from CA this week. I was asked to select a charger  level one or one of the level 2 chargers (see attachment). I would like to get a level 2 charger (14-30R) but I think that the extra versatility of the level 1 charger would be much more useful, even though it is slower. Does anyone know if I get a level 2 charger and an adapter to go from 14-30r to 5-15 (standard wall plug) will the level 2 charger function as if it were a level 1 charger when I plug it into a 5-15 outlet?

Get a Level 2, you're lucky to get the bike so soon.

You can always get another charger later. I would prob go for a level 2 if you have that in your garage.

Congrats on the bike, you will love it!

Where are you located?

I think some  granny cables  (they are NOT chargers, the AC charger is in your bike)are one AC voltage or the other and some can do both, 120 VAC and 240 VAC.

They are only an AC supply just like an AC outlet. I own a whole bunch of them, but I normally use my Tesla Wall Connector with a Tesla-Tap to charge up my motorcycles. The Tesla Wall Connector is just another 240 VAC supply.

Besides the AC charger in your bike, all fast charging on the road are real chargers. They are pure DC going direct to the battery.

Perhaps you already know all this stuff. I realize many call AC charge stuff as "chargers" by habit since it is done so commonly.

I'm located in eastern PA. I ordered the bike this year. I think I got lucky and snagged someone else's order because they contacted me and asked me if it was alright if they gave me a bike that was a little different then the bike I ordered. I told them that a free wireless start was fine with me. So I imagine someone canceled their order, for whatever reason, and since it was nearly identical to mine they just said "here you go."

So I imagine a $35 adapter will convert the 14-30r to a 5-15 and since the charger is in the bike it will charge at level 1 speed.

Thanks everyone for your comments and helping me choose a "charger".

I think you're most likely right about what happened. Something like that happened when I bought my Tesla M3. I was told on-line it was months away when I ordered.  Two days after I order on-line, I am asked to pick up the car at Rocklin Tesla on a Sunday. At first, I thought the email was a mistake. But they gave me the VIN and everything and I picked it up on that Sunday with a small crowd picking up their new Teslas.  That was back in late 2018.  But my Tesla was exactly what I ordered down to every little detail.

The Esse Esse 9 will charge at ~3KW with 240 VAC and half that with 120 VAC (~1.5KW). The AC voltage in determines the charge rate of L1 or L2, but 240 VAC max (3KW).  Unlike an older Zero or a LW that will decrease the current more as the voltage is increased as their chargers are half the wattage of the Esse Esse 9.

But I don't recall ever charging my Esse Esse 9- with 120 VAC. I have only used 240 VAC or CCS.

Congrats on the bike, you will love it!
It's my favorite bike out of my ten for most of my rides and I have the SS9-. 11,000 miles on it, time to change the rear tire. The front was changed a couple of thousand miles ago.

11,000 miles is a lot in three years when you consider how many bikes I ride and kinda try to rotate through. I think my SS9- is the bike I put the most miles on since owning.

It's like a boiling kettle -- if you're watching for it, it won't get there  :D

It's nice the hear there's another Energica rider nearby and on Esse Esse 9 to boot. Hope to see you at the local https://www.bikesandbreakfast.com/ meet some time in the future.

FYI, I am north of Baltimore in Aberdeen Maryland.

That's really cool.

That means between us is King of Prussia, which has some CCS.
