modifications - J1772 charge port mounting locations?
« on: October 09, 2022, 09:31:17 PM »

For those with custom added chargers, like the Diginow pan or the elcon chargers, where are you putting your J1772 charge ports? I'm about to roll the bike into the living room to install the diginow pan, but I realized my custom 3D brackets for my charge ports might need some re-working, but I'd also like to see other ideas for better locations. I'm actually thinking about just trying to shove both ports into the storage tank.

I always liked putting them behind the passenger pegs. A buddy actually made a metal mounting bracket that held both heads there which was really slick.

If you watch this video at the linked timestamp of 2:08 you can get an up close look at Jon's installation which is super clean.

Oh wow that'd be awesome if I could fab something like that up. I might try and swing in that direction, but my only means of fabrication is a 3D printer (will try and print in nylon X with carbon fiber)

Currently this is what my idea was that I don't really like.

That second location is where they had the chademo port on some old models

It would be cool to somehow put it in the frame tube but it would mean drilling a hole to run the cable through

I put mine in the frame tube, but my only goal was to connect to the original IEC-320 C14 male power receptacle.
No holes drilled for me as I used a short C13 cord stashed in the  tube to make the hookup when needed.
I was lucky in that I happened to have just shortened an awning roller which had just the right size to fit snuggly in the tube.
I cut and folded one end to screw down the 1772 charge port to the tube.
Black electrician tape on the other end for scratch protection and a tight fit.
(I still have a 10" or 2x5" tube section left)

So this is only held in with friction?

Yes. Hasn't moved in the past 9 years 16000 miles.
A strand of insulated wire was all it took to commit.
You can see it in light blue in one of the pictures.
Just lucky on the tube vs hole sizing. ;-)
