Help with brakes stuck partially engaged please
« on: September 07, 2022, 11:36:23 PM »

Hello! I ended up buying a 2021 Zero S and it has been great for the whole season until this week.

This week however I noticed the front brake reservoir is now fully filled when it was not before and the front brakes are partially engaged.  I tested this by riding for a little bit and not using the front brake at all and they still got pretty warm and there is a light squeak if I walk the bike of something catching.

Looking at the Zero manual it says I can't do a break bleed unless there is fluid in the Hydraulic Control Unit and I am not to sure how to even check that.

What would you guys recommend my next steps be?  The dealer is pretty far away so if this is something I can troubleshoot at home I would like to.

Please use small words :) my Motorcycle/mechanical knowledge is pretty low but I am trying to learn!

Small update to this if it helps at all, upon close inspection I also noticed that my break pads seem to be a lot thinner on the front even though it has only been 1000 miles.  Would almost gone break pads lead to the reservoir being full?

Rather than trying to explain all about brakes in a post, there are probably a lot of good YouTube videos about brake maintenance. There's no difference between ICE bikes and electric when it comes to brakes (apart from the added regen, of course). Anything you read or watch will apply to your Zero too.

If your pads are abnormally worn after 1000 miles and more specifically dragging, there is probably something wrong with the caliper. No amount of pad wear should stick the calipers as long as there is still pad present. Worn pads will never push fluid into the reservoir. However, if something has caused the pads to rack in such a way as to somehow push the pistons back into the caliper, that would push fluid back into the master. It's possible you could get lucky, simply replace the pads, lube the guide pins, and be done with it. Depending on how bad it is, I'd want the warranty repair while it's still valid.

It could be a defect in the master cylinder internals.

If still under warranty, take it to your dealership.
