Oddity trying to flash 2021 Zero SR

I just took delivery of a second hand SR from another forum user.  In checking it out today I noticed there was an available firmware upgrade, so since both the bike and the phone were fully charged, I figured I'd flash it while I was working on the rest of the bike.

I came back later and the dash was no longer flashing, but the app seemed to think the update was still going because instead of a message saying it was successful (or failed) there was a button that said "Abort update."

Since nothing seemed to be happening on the bike, I chose that thinking maybe the app didn't get the notification.  However, I restarted to app to double check and apparently the bike WASN'T updated, so I started the process again.

Forty minutes later... the same result.  Weird! Has anybody else seen anything like this?

I feel like that's been my experience with half of my flashing attempts on my '18 FXS. I'm not sure what incantation makes it eventually work.

First time I'm seeing something like this.  When I first got my 2018 S, it would frequently indicate the flash had FAILED, but upon examination it was successfully updated.  Richard230 was the first to report this and it happened for the first few flashes.  Eventually the flashes were completely successful.

This is the first time I've seen the bike "think" it was done, but the phone (apparently correctly) does not.

For the past couple of years, the few phone app updates that I installed would complete without that warning that it had failed, when it really didn't. So it would seem that Zero fixed the app problem. I am happy to report that my 2018 S is working exactly as it should with no glitches or strange things going on with the MMB and BMS. Custom still shows 98 mph and boots up correctly when I toggle the mode switch.

What confuses me is why if Zero had a working and stable system, why they felt the need to start over from scratch and spend the next few years, like they did with the Gen 2 models, fixing their programming. I have always believe that if you have something working well and are not having customers begging for changes, why make changes?  Is it just to have a new programming system title and a new fancy screen? Or were they sold a bill of goods by their Cyber programming consultants?  ???
