Did I buy a 2013 or 2014 Zero DS?
« on: March 05, 2022, 08:36:22 PM »

The titles arrived yesterday on the two DS models I purchased last month at auction and now I'm wondering on actual model dates. I've been using Burtons Zero Motorcycles 2013 S ZF11.4 wiring diagram as a general guide, and also the 2013 Owners Manual (just downloaded the 2014 manual).

At auction, they were each listed as: 2013 Zero DS Police Motorcycle
On the titles however, are listed the following:
Year Model: 2014
Year 1st Sold: 2013
Issue Date: 06/2014
Odometer Date: 10/2013
Batteries on both are ZF 9.4

It's looking to me like these are actually 2014 models made in 2013. I'm not so concerned about DMV and I'm happy either way, I just don't want to miscommunicate the wrong model years here since I'll be asking lots of questions (neither is roadworthy yet). Like many others that have posted, I have not located any high voltage fuses in the locations described in the owners manual (2013), and there's a few differences in the standard wiring compared to Burtons.

On a fun note, quite a bit of additional wiring (see attachment of under the seat photo) to play with, and it's all neatly organized and labeled. I have several former police vehicles and it's nice to see the harnesses (and additional wiring) on these weren't mutilated previous to sale. I'll share more photos if anyone is interested.

Now that I've reviewed the 2014 Owners Manual, the display better matches what I see in the 2013 manual, and the 4 fuses from the DC-DC converter match Burtons 2013 diagram vs what I see in the 2014 manual. The app isn't much help, both bikes will connect via bluetooth but come up as Unknown Models. It's likely the police/military versions aren't supported by the app. I've read there may have been a recall on the 2013 battery and if replaced, that may explain why I don't see any of the high voltage fuses shown in the manual. The only fuse I see is the Low Power B+ on top of the battery in an aluminum looking box.

Here's another peak at additional wiring under the seat.

Is the 10th digit of the VIN a D or an E?   D is 2013.  E is 2014.   This is spelled out in the owner's manual that you can download from Zero's website.  Digit 11 is a C on these bikes standing for Plant Location, Scotts Valley, CA.

It's a D on both, thanks!

Pretty simple also: If you have an analog RPM gauge, it's a 2013. If you have a wide LCD display, it's a 2014.

Thanks! Yes, analog gauge. Looks like all signs point to 2013 DS.
