Grandmas House Nema 5-15 Charger Modification (2021/SRS)
« on: February 17, 2022, 06:15:06 AM »

So on my SRS Premium with the J-Plug up to 6kW, I have seen several older model Zero that just had a NEMA 5-15 plug on the side of the bike. I gotta say I think there is something to that, without carrying around my charger with 20ft cable on both ends and a big J-Plug. What I wanted to do is buy a standard NEMA/110v charger, Trim down the adaptor so it can be mounted under the seat, hardwire the charging end to the back of the J-Plug connector on the Bike and trim the power end to a nub/male end So I could just access an extension cord and plug in. Also everything fits under the seat and the wires hidden. So my only real concern is if I do plug into a J-Plug charger is there a chance the current would go to the adaptor under the seat, will that be an issue? I assumed I would have a disconnect somehow in between the back of the mounted plug and the adaptor under the seat. For the life of me I cannot think of a good quick connect or if it is needed at all. Any Thoughts?

No, The J-Plug is the AC side of the chargers that are installed on the motorcycle, your "Charging Station/Cord" is just a fancy/smart outlet, that gave AC power to the onboard charger/chargers.

You just need something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Morec-NEMA6-20P-Adapterfor-100V-240V-Compatible/dp/B07Q5RD5TL
And, again, those are not chargers , just " smart extension cords " that can tell your onboard chargers what is the maximum power that can safely take from the outlet that they're connected too.

I carry one of these in my backpack just in case I lose my cord I can use any old extension cord.

I’ve lost 2 cables out of the swing arm of my FXS just riding hard.

He has the SR/S model that needs the J1772 plug and protocol in order to charge, so that won't work.

As others here are attempting to point out, what you attach to the bike to give power must obey EVSE protocol. This is one of the major changes to the whole FST platform. As such, the smallest EVSE is the TurboCord. you might look into getting one of those if you don't like carrying around a large level 2 EVSE.

It seems that he already have one, and also not aware that he already have onboard 6KW chargers, and his "charger with 20ft cable" isn't actually the 6KW charger.

There is a simple fix for that.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I am still re-reading your answers but I believe I did not explain this correctly, I am sorry for that. I do understand the power protocol even if I cannot communicate it well.  :o
How about this, does anyone know of the most compact, smallest, short cord, level-1 J-plug adaptor for a NEMA 5-15?

This one, with an US plug on it   ;D

I used something similar with this: https://www.amazon.com/CenryKay-Generator-Adjustable-Rectangular-Controller/dp/B08R5DM2FV, (also need a diode and some resistors, if I remember correctly)  and I was able to activate, and change the amount of power that the charger will take, but I found a good deal on a decommissioned Commercial Charging Station, and I didn't needed to DIY.
