2015 SR ive had for a few months and now the battery needs to be replaced. Cost is $6000 which is more than I paid for the bike.  Is that really the cost??? If so, this bike is a wash.

I remember seeing a recent post somewhere else about a 14.4KWh battery replacement cost of 9000 Euro here in Europe, so it seems plausible and I find it extreme and ridiculous when you consider the average battery price for EVs per kWh going down every year.

Yup. But for everyone in europe, there's someone building 14,4kWh replacement packs for Zeros, just so you know.

even for the GEN2/3 bikes with password protected software, where the bike does not accept any new parts without authentication (even for Zero OEM parts)?

Not that it's relevant to the cost of a replacement battery, but why does it need to be replaced? Is it completely dead? Lost too much capacity? I'm just curious.

I was fortunate in that my 2014S required a replacement battery, but that happened just prior to the end of the 5 year warranty. As such, this was covered by the factory. This outcome was in part owing to the purchase having been as new, but after the bike having been on the dealer floor quite a while. If you have access to the original purchase date, you might see if by any stroke of luck this was within 5 years of now.

While I didn't have to pay for the replacement, the dealer who performed that replacement noted a price similar to what you were quoted. Had I needed to pay out of pocket, I likely would have at least limped along with the decreasing range until my 20 mile one way commute was not possible.

Here is what I believe. The dealerships biggest payoff is going to be replacing the battery for the service department. I am wondering how much time they actually spent diagnosing the problems. 

The problem and why it was in the shop began with range issues ( after 8 miles it would be 55% SOC at a steady 50 mph) and the bike not being able to go past 70 mph (bike would shut down and then reengage while driving and SOC would read 0% and start regeneration).

So when they tell me it's going to cost $6000 in repairs, like who would actually do that when warranty is not covered?  It just sounds like a bait and hook situation.

Is there anyway to diagnose these problems on our own? I just have a hard time believing dealerships.

The zero unofficial manual has instructions on how to connect to the MBB through the OBDII port, https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Gen2/MBB_Console. Under the BMS data, you should be able to see the cell voltages. I suspect you'll find a very weak cell. That's the first an easiest thing to access. Next up, this guy, https://www.electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7561.0, figured out the same type of TTL access but directly to the BMS. Through it, you'll get a terminal interface similar to that of the MMB, but you can get more information about the battery module.

Even without doing that, just connecting to the bike on the app and looking at the balance in mV will be very telling.

Using a Kill a Watt meter to measure the power input from dead to 100% and comparing it to the spec should also show a massive decrease.

Papochk, sorry to hear you have problems.

As some have pointed out on here there are a couple ways to see if perhaps you can pin point the issue.
The only real hope at this point might be it's just a bad BMS which would be about $900 at your dealer.  You could try the BMS reset to see if it helps at all.

If the cells are failing then the battery is done.  They are potted and can't be repaired.

A couple of things to keep in mind though.  It costs about $3k for the one brick power tank.  From that point of view $6k for a 4 brick monolith isn't bad. 
If you got the bike for less than $6k then it sounds like they knew the battery was dying.

If you get the new battery the value of the bike will of course go up.

Hey everyone, thank you so much for the support.  I can try the BMS reset on my day off. I will try to see what how much KW is charging soon and report that. Is there anyway to tell about the brick from the front LED lights? just curious

Without logging to the MBB or the BMS, perhaps you can get a lot of information from the logs that you can extract from the bike using the Zero Application on your smartphone.
I join an example extracted from my bike.
On my FXS with two battery packs, I get a log for each pack, so I can get information separately from each pack. I don't know what it gives on long bricks (7.2 kWh): do you also get 2 log files? And 4 log files for the 14.4 kWh packs?
I do not get the voltage of each cell, but I can monitor the pack voltage, the mean cell voltage, the lower cell voltage, the higher cell voltage, and of course the unbalance (difference between higher and lower cell voltages).
