Lifespan of Pirelli Diabolo Rosso III on SR/F
« on: May 14, 2020, 12:35:37 AM »

Hi there

I wonder how long do your Pirelli Diabolo Rosso III last on the SR/F?

I have ridden the SR/F for 3'400 km and was down to (heavily illegal - at least in Switzerland) 0.8 mm.

However, as it was a demo bike I'm not quite sure if the tires were brand new when I started to ride.

I have ridden these 3'400 km almost all in Eco mode with Traction Control in Rain Mode.

My Rosso III's were toast last week at 7200 km. Mostly riding in the weekend with my girlfriend and also a bit of commuting (when it is not below 10C :) )
I ride with a custom setting with everything maxed out at 100% (speed, power torque, regen and brake regen). Very nice almost not having to brake before cornering. It does however wear the rear tire faster as it has to grip with acceleration, cornering and regen.

I think eco mode on the SR/F also has quite strong regen so maybe that has contributed to your quick wear.
The Netherlands are as flat as a pancake, unlike Switzerland so going up and down mountains will surely wear tires faster.

I replaced the Rosso rear tire with a Michelin Road 5 which is also suitable for the SR/F according to the manual. The road 5 is supposed to be grippy enough on the sides and has harder rubber in the middle for more kilometers.

I have only 400 kilometers on the road 5 so it is a very early comment but the tire feels really good compared to the worn Rosso, but that is not really a surprise. The Rosso was quite square off in the center from lack of curvy mountain roads :) A new tire always rides better than a worn one.

I got now Metzeler M9RR.

Probably I'm a bit (or more than a bit) overdone with these - I'm still a learner and not a racer.

However, my Rosso III HAD to be changed (with only 0.8mm left) as I'm going to do my first official lesson today (in group) and they would'nt let me take the course without proper tires.

So I had to take those which the dealer had available ...

Mine are still usable at 9.500 km. I'll check for an actual measurement later today.

My original Pirelli Rosso II tires are/were weird. The front tire melted away at 6K miles, while the rear tire looks like it will last over 10K miles.  I have heard that the Rosso III tires are even softer, are designed more for sport riding than the IIs and will wear out even faster than the previous versions.

If you are looking for a tire with decent wear for normal street riding you might want to check out Michelin Street Radial tires. That is what I put on my front wheel and they appear to be good value for the money.

Here are my numbers with 9500 km since August for getting to work. Hasn't moved for 2 months due to covid -19 and before that once stranded for repair for 45 days but otherwise used 4 days a week.

Both tyres have just over 3mm left at center.

So - I've been at the dealer where I bought my demo SR/F.

And against what I believed, the tires were not new when I took it over. They were the original tires. So they lasted some 7000 km in total.

I'm happy to know that I dont' have to change every 3400 km or so ...

I realize this is an old tread (<- see what I did there?), however the topic is still current and relevant.

I had the tires on my SR/S replaced today. The front tire probably still had a little bit of life in it, but the rear tire was worn down to the wear indicator. The ride also got a bit stiff (try to corner with worn tires... good luck).

The change happened after about 8900 km (5530 miles). Although I have all the settings maxed out, I'm not racing at all. My average energy consumption is at about 70 Wh per km or 113 Wh per mile which is probably rather low. Obviously I do occasionally open throttle but that's more the exception than the rule.

Nothing to discuss here... just providing another data point :)

I got 5500 miles out of my rear too and it got down to 1mm tread, and a little squared off. The front wore in a really peculiar fashion, more at the edges than the middle leaving it in a not-round shape. Handling was getting a bit rubbishy. Replaced both with Michelin Road 5s now - a great improvement, I feel.

Cas :)

From new, 6500 out of front, 9000 out of rear.
Replaced both with Metzeler Roadtec 01
