Shocked at the battery latch on my FX
« on: August 20, 2021, 12:29:31 AM »

Wow Zero, you protect the most important part of the bike with two itty bitty bolts? That don't even have lock tight applied? Looks like I'm taking a trip to the hardware store because one managed to work its way loose and disappeared. You'd think they'd have welded this one. Thousands of dollars could be lost by something just walking up and cracking these screws, as we all know, the battery is the most costly thing on any EV.

I really hope we don't get to the point where battery theft becomes a thing. I think they were more focused on making them fairly easy to remove for owners for swapping and charging externally.

The latch itself isn't the problem, it's the latch mounting point where it hooks on. I mean, these are designed to be hardcore offroad dirtbikes, and these two bolts hold in ~100 lbs of batteries.

Considering a new Z force pack is upwards of $3k, this could be a real problem, but I guess most criminals would just take the whole bike.

Oh my if the folks that take catalytic converters off new vehicles at the dealers lot change their targets to vehicle batteries something I never thought of happening.  Or Like steal a tail light lens instead of buying one after yours got smashed.  I am hoping for removable batteries to be the stuff I buy in the future but perhaps it isn't for many.  This could get serious if the batteries are actually worth some money as scrap.

The ktm battery uses four long bolts going straight down, Well they are really studs with the nut end that stays with the battery looking like the end of a bolt. I think it is a 10mm nut driver to take them out. I doubt that battery is  going to shake around.  I have a few battery chainsaws and the way the battery is held and released is a notable difference Husqvarna vs Makita.

Is the battery in the NON-modular FX or FXS removable in the same way as the modular FX or FXS?

I guess in theory it might be possible for batteries to become a target, but it seems pretty unlikely in the near term.  I doubt by the time battery theft becomes an issue, I won't have my FXS any longer.

The lock core wiggles open if you look at it with googly eyes (and a paperclip!)

There is a pin that the L bar battery holder sits on. That is probably more what is retaining the battery than the shear strength of those two tiny bolts.

Makes me think maybe someone should come up with a different, aftermarket solution and market it.   It would sell in the 10s.   ;)

I noticed that, and it's a good point, but since my latch fell off from the bolts working themselves loose it wasn't doing anything at all. I went to home depot and they only had socket head screws in M3, not pan head, so we'll see if those will work.
