SR/S 12 volt battery behavior question
« on: June 08, 2021, 09:56:40 AM »

After some 2 months I finally got my Zero synchronized with my smart phone via Bluetooth.  It took over an hour.  Probably my fault for using an old refurbished Tracfone that I am not very good with.

Near the end of the synchronization process the SOC indication dropped from 65% to 0% and all four blinkers started flashing and the 12 volt battery warning symbol came on.  I also had a message and fault code saying low battery voltage.  I then plugged in the charger cable, but the flashing blinkers continued until I cycled the ignition key.  At this time the SOC came back up and read 63%, I think. After a short while the "red" battery warning light turned off and only had a "red" error code icon which I cleared.

Manual is not very clear to me on the behavior of the 12 volt battery, can anyone enlighten me?  I did not read anywhere that you should have the charger cable plugged in when programming, or was I just too slow?  Is there a way to monitor the 12 volt battery voltage?  All it says is do not let it drop below 10 volts I think, how?

It looks like my phone app got properly mated to the bike, test ride tomorrow ti see if it works unless it is raining again.

I had this problem during one of my firmware updates on my SR/F last year.  Zero support thought it was probably a battery issue, but after a few rides (this was right after storage), I was able to get through the upgrade and the battery seems OK now.  Others have had to replace or recharge the 12V Lithium battery from time to time.  Seems like the automatic battery maintenance (charging setup) is not ideal, or the battery is a bit over taxed.  If you have a Lithium compatible charger, you might want to top of the 12V battery (under the seat) and then give it a try.

Done a couple of 20 mile rides and everything seems to be working fine.  I somehow must have drained the 12 volt battery, not sure how.  For the time being I am not going to worry about it.

Wondering if there is some way that one could hook up a battery monitor to the 12 Volt battery to keep an eye on it.  Had one on most of my ICE bikes and it saved me a couple of times when the battery was starting to fade.

Sure, I even  have a 12 voltmeter on all my electric bikes even though none of them have a 12V battery. Just the 12V DC2DCC (really is around 13.8 VDC, just as is your battery as it is charging).

Does your bike have a 12 volt accessory outlet? If so, you can plug in one of these thingies.

If not, you can get both at once with a little wiring to the battery.
