SR vs SR/F
« on: May 14, 2021, 05:24:48 PM »

For those of you that have switched, what do you consider the most notable differences?  I've been riding an FXS for the last few years, but my commute is about to get longer so I need to upgrade.  From what I've read:

SR/F is significantly faster, also heavier and slightly less range
SR/F has more forward ergonomics
SR/F has more bells and whistles - more riding modes, traction control, cruise control, color screen
SR/F comes standard with faster charging

What else have I missed?

Thanks!

The SR/F uses the newer motor software, and can use the pegs from the SR/S to reduce the more aggressive pose.

The SR/F is also more expensive and larger.  And uses and LED headlights, which matters to some.

I haven’t ridden the SR/F, but I rented an SR/S in Phoenix and rode about 200 miles. I expected to like it a lot more than my SR, and was surprised to find that I didn’t. It handled more confidently and had more power, but I preferred the SR’s flickability, more relaxed riding position, greater range, and less interventionist software.

When the battery capacities edge above 20 kW, I might buy a new battery instead of a new bike depending on what Zero does with their (D)SR bikes over the next few years.

Btw, SR/S foot pegs can also be fit onto the SR. I put some on mine and they made a night and day difference in my ride comfort.

Neat!

Yes, I think there's a place for the S Platform bikes; they're smaller and lighter and that's good for a beginner.  And they're not as tall as the X Platform bikes, so they're not as intimidating.

Coming from an FX(S) it will also handle more stable on the road and on higher speeds. But only on clean even roads. Anything more bumpy and you'll prefer the lighter FX or any lighter S and DS models. Less weight make the bake easier to flick from left to right or the other way around in fast turning roads. That said the SR/F is not hard at all to ride (nothing compaired to Energica's).

Another noticeable difference is in the way the belt is replaced. For the previous design you had to take the swingarm out in order to fit a belt. No longer needed with SR/F and SR/S. That belt is wider than the other models but it also has to take more power so in the end it's also not up to the task so also needs replacing either every 10.000 km to be sure or have a spare cause you can't really notice it coming apart. It will just snap at some point (my first one snapped at 13.000km ).

If you're look for a more upright position you can check the SR/S or indeed like suggested swap the SRS footpegs onto the SRF (that gains around 20mm) and then also use bar risers in the front.

Because of the higher weight, more front mass and more resistance of the wider wheels you'll have less range for the same battery capacity. That is overcome by the faster chargers available. Either 3, 6, 9 or 12kW can be installed on these.

I wouldn't look at the bells and whistles personally. They are too fragile and often not available for longer perios of time in between firmware versions. For example the connected ride feature where the bike reports directly to the cloud is broken since firmware version 18 and still now in version 19. It should report location (which it still does in a way) but also charge state and the amount of time left charging. That SOC and charge flags are all gone since 2 firmware releases. Also the feature where you can have the phone connected over bluetooth while riding to record a ride didn't work very well. I've used it once with success and then twice it failed to record and I gave up on that. Since then I just query the GPS point on the starcom interface instead or use apps like Yamaha my Ride. The difference is that those solutions don't have the power numbers embedded.

I even got in a state where my bike was unaware of the storage mode (was on version 17, storage added in version 18) and the app was already updated and I made the mistake to try the storage mode and since that point the app was blocked thinking the bike was in storage while the bike couldn't be taken out of storage cause it never was to begin with. I didn't want to update to version 18 because of the bigger issues with range. Eventually a dealer updated to version 19 for me so since then I could at least use the app again. Though that still broke other things. But some features are simply not available without the app. Think of custom ride modes and charge schedules.

Not sure but does your FXS have an onboard charger? If so that one is known to fail at some point, at least the ones for the S and DS. Those issues seem to be resolved with the new charger platform. The water ingress issues however still remain, plenty of reports of those and also from my own experience. They are solved now after I had the spider bus threated for that.
