Elcon / TC / Diginow charger
« on: August 25, 2023, 12:11:31 AM »

I have four Elcon TC HK-J 3300W Chargers on my Zero motorcycle, and one has failed. I would like to replace this single charger. It is from one of Diginow's kits.

It needs to be a 3rd gen one, with the removable heat sinks but no quick disconnects on the cables. The 4th gen ones won't fit into my charger boxes. Does anyone have one I could buy?

If nobody else can help you, try sending an email to Elcon.   Their Email address is in the link.

Sayyed is the name of the guy who knows how to program up the chargers for Zero. He did the four external chargers for my 2017 Zeros.

Okay, but why can't Econ help him out in this case if it's an Elcon charger he needs to have replaced?

Because Elcon doesn't make anything and since TC stopped making the kinds with the flexy wiring instead of the hard disconnects he's going to be up a certain creek without a paddle unless he wants to spec out a custom order of a pallet of units from them. Place your bets on that one.

MVetter, you are correct. I have talked with Sayyed but he doesn't have any of the old style. I could completely redo my charger boxes to suit the new style TC chargers but that would be a lot of work. I have about 11.5 kW charging rate right now, with 3 x 3.3 kW TC chargers plus I put the OEM charger back on the bottom of the battery pack. So it's not some emergency, I'd just like to get back up to 14.5 kW...

If I was to go with the new style, I'd probably use two 6.6 kW ones with integral fans. But they are a lot thicker than what I have now.

Are you in Europe? I am just wondering where you find those 14.5 KW AC charge stations. We have a few in the USA, but they are very rare. Most of our AC Charge stations can only do around 7KW, such as the most common ChargePoints.

Or do you use two plugs at once, where possible?

But Tesla Destination charge stations vary all over in capacity and are normally a higher capacity than the J-1772s. I have been considering adding a 6.6 KW charger to my Zero DSR/X, but there just are not enough places where I ride where such can be used.

BTW, I use two newer 3.3 KW Elcons to charge my 2017 Zero SR.  With the OBC, I can charge it just under 8 KW. Some of the hardware they come with can be removed to make it a bit smaller. I carry one each in each of my Zero side bags. I use my chargers externally and only take them on longer road trips. Mine ignore the control pilot, so I adjust manually. The also are very simple, they do not use the canbus. They shut off at 95% SOC, where it will slow down anyway. I then but the stuff away while still charging with the OBC. Works well and is simple.

I had Sayyed program them up for me. Sayyed has a Harley LW. We have done a few rides together.

Charge at 8kw  feh.  I can do that in my sleep in My garage :)
Go fast or go home.

The US ones, rarely are you going to see much over 30 Amp to a charger, at that point the thicker wire, etc etc just gets cost prohibitive unless you want to hardwire it.  Even then, now you need a sub panel with breakers and how many hundred feet of 6 ga x3 or whatnot to set the thing up.  There are programs out there to help people pay for these stations but it's a lot of red tape and  even more bullshit to actually get qualified and GET the money.

Now, you have to partner with someone to handle the money, ie charge point, bla bla,and THEY want their cut.  More times than not the people who put the chargers up, end up  paying even more for the damned things to the 3rd party just to have them, then they ever make with them.  you could run your own, issue your own pre paid cards or rfid thingles but that's more overhead on YOUR part.  Then there is liability, when little miss dip shit and her 3 screeching crotch goblins running around the car / bike when it's charging, get tangled up in the cord and trip or damage something.  Then the law offices of douche bag, schmeckle and keckel come into play seeing who they all can sue.

As much as we all would love to see it, wide range affordable charging is a long long way off.  There really is no incentive to do it yet and very few are going to do it just to feel good.  As an attractant to ones business maybe, slim chance, but as a value added thing. not so much.

From what more than one person is saying on a few boards I am on, there are a LOT of chargers that are OOC too.  I can easily see the companies saying, F that  thing, it was a money pit, at least not it's not costing me each month, good riddance.

I do have an honest question on that though.   WHY??? are there so many that are OOC?  Are they just that poorly made?  I can't see people lining up for blocks to use the things and wearing them out that fast,so what's up with that???

The tech on them really really is so similar to the fork truck thargers you see out there that are very modular, and they are pretty solidly built,so why the issue here?  Is it because of the higher voltages?  Yah 600 vdc and above can get creepy and fizzy.

DonTom, I'm in the US. I can use two J1772 ports, so 14kW is pretty easy to find.

Lots of details here:

Not so easy out here. Many are ChargePoint's that I use and most of them split the power between the two cables.  There are a few than can do 14KW but they are rarely in the locations where I need such.

DonTom, I can find 12 to 14kW probably 95% of the time. Most of the ChargePoints with 2 handles around here are not shared. Sometimes I use a TeslaTap for one side, then J1772 on the other. I can pull 11.5 kW from an RV site using 14-50 for the three TC chargers plus either 5-15 or TT-30 for the OEM charger.

In Labrador, at a highway maintenance depot, they didn't have any outlets other than 5-15. The mechanic there helped me run cords and find three outlets on different breakers, which let me reach 4.5 kW on just Level 1. It's about 250 miles between towns there, with literally nothing but wilderness and two depots, so it was good he was willing to help!

off topic, but where does your CP cable from the J1772 connect to?

I know it's 2023 and it may be a stupid question. But any chance you can send the broken unit to someone to repair?

They are not designed to be worked on, by the way they are potted inside to deal with vibrations and moisture. If they can be repaired (I assume anything can be repaired) it would be a lot cheaper just to buy a new one, in at least most cases.

If can no longer be purchased new, keep checking ebay and junkyards and such. Still may need to be programmed, depeng on what one finds. Most (all?) of the external Zero chargers were designed as forklift chargers but they run a different program. That, Elcon can take care of.

I ordered a newer Gen 3 with the big connectors. Will try to rig up a compact way to make those connections without burning down my house.

ceejays88:
The box of parts I bought used included a little gizmo in heat shrink that connects to the CP pin and ground pin (I think). It has always worked fine so I haven't messed with it. I assume it's just a resistor inside, but maybe it has a diode, also.

Here's the result of a quick search:

You'd be interested in D, R2, R3 and S2.
