Not able to charge 2017 Zero SR
« on: April 14, 2021, 07:46:31 AM »

Heya folks, I'm currently hitting an issue with my SR that's causing the bike to not charge. When I go to a nearby ChargePoint station that I frequently use instead of the charge icon going to solid green it starts flashing red, indicating that it's not charging correctly. Has anyone else had this issue before? The bike is at ~7% charge right now and I've tried 2 other ChargePoint stations nearby but none of them are working. Based on this other discussion https://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=5492.0 it looks like I need more charge in the bike for it to work but I don't have anywhere nearby to charge it. I live in an apartment with no accessible wall outlets to use a 3 pin cable with so I'm pretty much out of ideas and I don't want it to be completely empty.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated :)

Let's get some more info . . . .

What are you using between the bike and the CharePoint station?  Do you own an AC voltmeter?  Are you only using the OBC or are you also using other external chargers?

Do you hear the contactor close? Have you tried to charge with the key on?

Are you located somewhere where it is very hot or cold? Was it after a lot of hard riding?

If it's above 0%, then the charge level isn't what matters.

I'm using the ChargePoint station cable and plug, never had issues with them prior, just plugged in after contacting the station with my phone to unlock it. I do not own a voltmeter. I heard the contactor close, clicks like usual, and I have the key in with the bike on like usual. I also tried with the key in but turned off, and the key entirely out but no luck. I'm in WA, it was a nice 65 today, and I went to charge after the bike was sitting for a week. I had tried charging it a week ago but had the same issue so I decided to try again later when the weather was nicer.

Are you saying you have the charge tank on your SR?

That is correct, sorry didn't mention that. I've only used the charge tank to charge it so far.

I am wondering if your problem is in your charge tank, such as the charger itself.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about that Charge tank as I charge my 2017SR with external chargers (up to ten KW!).

I assume you still have the OBC and the Anderson Connectors above the motor.

But I also assume you don't have a DeltaQ charger or an adapter for the J-1772 to go to the OBC.

You want to get that battery charged back up a bit somehow. That's probably your biggest issue for now. Any other Zero owners around there who could have a DeltaQ Quick charger?

I have all that stuff here, but you're a bit far away.

...You left it sitting at 7% for a week?

Why wouldn't you just plug it into an extension cord?

Unfortunately I don't know anyone else that has an electric bike, let alone the equipment needed. What I'm thinking is to see if I can find a nearby 3pin outlet I can use at a gas station or store nearby that can at least get me above 15% so I can make it to one of the Blink chargers in the area and try that. I live in the city so I'm hoping that won't be much of an issue to find :fingers-crossed:

@Crissa because as I mentioned in the initial comment I live in an apartment building that has no wall outlets in the garage (3 floor garage, my spot is on the bottom level). If I could get a 50ft cord maybe I could charge it from my apartment out the window but I don't have one so that would be a last resort. It was also at 12% before I took it out today to try and find a working charge station nearby. It's currently at 7% sitting down in the garage.

You just need an outlet.

I've never had to go more than a quarter mile to fine someone with an outlet.  Last time I ended up charging behind a sandwich shop.  You don't need special equipment for an S or X platform, tho the F platform needs its granny cable.

Leaving the bike uncharged for that amount of time is skirting close with violating the warranty.

Go to Plugshare and set the options for "Residential Locations"  and outlets and see what you can find in your area.

You will have more luck with your OBC than with  another J-1772 type station.

BTW, is your chargetank to old 3KW version?  Did I hear that the charge tanks also use the OBC?  If so, can you use the OBC alone?  And can you use the ChargeTank without the OBC?

Update on this: I ended up walking around the city and found a wall outlet at a nearby mall I could park at. Charged it up to ~15%, moved it over to a ChargePoint and it started charging without issue ;D. Generally I don't let it get under 10% but I guess I'll have to not let it get under 15% so I don't run into this issue again. Thanks folks!

That's great!  And now you know a trick in case it happens again.

But . . .

Since you cannot charge at home, perhaps not letting it ever get below 20% would be best and even then try to charge to 60% or so before you store it for more than a few days at home.

Consider adding that AC outlet to Plugshare, if it's not there already. That could help others.
