The Tesla-Tap to NEMA 14-50R box for Power Tanks
« on: March 18, 2021, 05:32:53 AM »

This is a must have for Zero's with a PowerTank (notice I did NOT say ChargeTank).  I will do a quick review of the box here. There will more reviews posted here  after I use it various ways that have given me trouble in the past.

I just did a very quick test of it on my Tesla Wall Connector.

Unlike other Tesla-Taps where they require usually / often well more than 30 seconds (but they say wait 30 seconds with them all, including this one) to plug into the EV after the Destination charger is plugged in, this one activates in around 12 seconds. Much better than any of the others, where  I have to wait a full minute or more.

Also, this one you can plug everything in first, wait your 15 seconds or so, and then press the "Activate EVSE" button. If you press it before the 15 seconds, you will get a red error light on the Tesla charge station and it will then have to be reset and then you start over.

I expect this will work very well for me with my Zero SR with Power Tank.

It is a bit large. The box is 9.5" by 7" by 4.5" high.

The unit comes with no instructions other than what is on the box itself; "Plug in charging connector into adapter and wait 30 seconds before activating".  There is an "Activate EVSE" button and then the green "power on" light is lit.

There is also a knob by the handle which seems to do nothing at all. You can turn it to "off" and "on" and nothing changes.  I assume it's built  in a box that is used for other stuff, and this is just a knob that does nothing at all in this unit.

It weights 3 lbs according to my bathroom scale.

Looks similar to a Pelican case (or perhaps it's an older design), in which case the knob could be a pressure equalisation valve.

Yep, it is very close to this one.

I just found a big advantage  to my  new Tesla Box.  And it's with my Tesla!

Sometimes I have too many motorcycles and tools and such in the garage to drive in my Tesla, so I leave it outside. My Tesla Wall connector will not reach. You cannot buy Tesla extensions because they are 48 amps and they don't want more connectors used. But we can buy J1772 extensions. So I try a regular Tesla-Tap to a J-1772 extension cable, wait many minutes, plug it in to my Tesla and then  get the red light on my Tesla Wall Connector and then need to try again. I have gotten it to work, but perhaps 1 out of ten times with a 20 minute wait.  A big hassle.

So today, I tried my new box. Waited less than 30 seconds, activated it and now my Tesla is charging outside at 32 amps (the upper  limit when a J1772 is used instead of the 48 amp Tesla connector).

So I am already finding this box to be very  useful.
