Recommended Change to Forum Categories

Apologies if this has been posted before.  Currently this site combines all Zero motorcycles from 2013 on into one forum.  Due to the significant differences between the Gen 3 bikes (SR/F and SR/S) and Gen 2 models, I recommend a separate forum for each group.  This will avoid unnecessary and sometimes irrelevant posts when a Gen 2 owner responds to a Gen 3 topic or vice versa.

Well it has been brought up before yes.  When they came out with the SRF it was only one bike.  Then the SRS was a bit of a surprise, and really about the same bike with maybe 10% of differences.

The thing that muddies the water is that they still make Gen 2 bikes and no talk of dropping them any time soon.  If a Gen 2 owner only stays in the Gen 2 section then Gen 3 guys miss out on a lot of experience from the Gen 2 guys.

At some point, likely with one or two new Gen 3 models added then a Gen 3 section is in order.  Just clearly listing what year and model you have works for now as even the old S/DS bikes were quite different than the FX/FXS bikes.

Of course it's not my call but it helps to post in a section where you will have the most people looking and thus most likely to get the help you need.

It's also worth bearing in mind that some of us who have the older/lower models still know a bit and are able to help with SR/S/F issues (or they're issues shared or similar to ones with the older/lower models). I don't know about other people but if there was a separate SR/F/S section I don't think I'd end up going there very often, the same way I don't check out the Energica, Livewire, Damon, etc. sections.

I agree.

The F platform still uses the same batteries and some accessories, too.

The only big difference is the software, and even then Zero doesn't always make the updates clear between the platforms.

And the X platform is also different, too, but it's in the group.  Until a bike is discontinued, it shouldn't be relegated.  Newbies aren't going to know the difference anyhow.

This forum is already split up into far too many categories that end up having overlapping discussions. Personally I'd rather see the opposite, and merge the pre-2013 and post-2013 categories so we can have all zero discussions in one place.

Yes the SR/S and SR/F are a different platform with their own issues, but there's still a lot of overlap in knowledge between the different platforms and certainly a lot of overlap with the customer service/dealer experience which is often discussed on this forum.

The pre-2013 don't share... anything, though.

They share the dealership/zero customer service experience as well as the same general layout and thinking in their drivetrains and the troubleshooting around them. The specific parts are different but the overall situation when it comes to troubleshooting and dealing with issues is very much inline with newer zero bikes.

If you always view Unread Posts, it doesn't matter what subforum anything is in. It's not like there are that many posts.

The forum software needs to be replaced though. It's abysmal.

Caza the big difference is pre 13 bikes have no support.  Unless a seller has some old stock you can't get new parts.  It's different motors chargers battery types and even operating voltage.

I'd like to see a pinned disclaimer in the pre section explaining only knowledgeable EV DIY folks should consider a pre 13 bike at this point.

That's a good idea for all the forums!

And of course it would also be important to mention that all of the 2012 S/DS models have been recalled by the factory due to the possibility of them catching fire while being recharged, with a link to the already pinned thread regarding that recall.

I wonder how many 2012 S/DS models are still twisting in the wind out there.  ??? I imagine there couldn't be many, but I bet there are a few still moving under their own power somewhere.

I vote to keep the Zero forums the same.  Sometimes we get a new person who asks the ubiquitous question "Which Zero should I buy?"  That can cover the whole current model range.  When the gen2 bikes become legacy and are no longer sold (or supported), then perhaps it's time to separate them out.

That said, the forum description for the 2013+ models say "A place to post about 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Zero models."

That should get updated.
