Install Garmin & Oiling System on SS9+
« on: August 24, 2020, 12:32:25 PM »

Hi everyone,
it might be worthwhile for some of you if I’d share some experience I made with installing constant power supply for my Garmin and an oiler system. Sound & vid quality is not great but I hope good enough to see what I did.
Thanks Demoni for sharing the excellent hint on the UA junction cable. By using this I did’t have to alter the SS9 harness at all.

Already discovered a downside of that set-up:
During charging, the aux USB port is powered, thus is the oiler... it continues to apply drops onto the chain. I will have to make it switched.
Furthermore, when I wanted to give it a test while the bike was on a rear stand and the seat was up, the dash reported ‘kill switch engaged’. At first I thought that the extra DC load was somehow detected from the Energica electronics and that caused the fault. It took me a few minutes to realize that the seat actually has a kill switch as well 8).

Thanks for the feedback :)

I did the same setup, almost, but I solved the problem for the oiler always ON during charging.

I use a magnetic switch and got a magnet linked to my ignition key, this way, when I remove the key, I never forget to switch OFF the oiler ;)
If you don't have magnetic switch, I would probably go for a transistor linked to tail lights

But I would prefer the USB to be switched OFF while charging, as a factory setting, or at least a parameter in the options of the bike.

Thanks for the inputs
But it is nothing for me
Every 2000 km I clean the chain (which the oiler cannot do) and then oil the chain.
This is done with the stand in about 10 minutes and the rest should also be cleaned
(I'm proud of the moped)

I clean the chain every 500km and then spray special O-Ring grease on the chain, I have been doing this as long as I drive bikes equipped with an O-Ring chain. This operation takes less than 15 minutes, you are not busy for that long, but it is best to let the cleaner work for 5 minutes and then clean with a rag. The grease is also not a mess like the oil, just oiling is not the solution because you will continue to have a dirty chain and always oil and oil on it ...

I was riding cardan-driven BMWs since 1999, but before always had chain-driven bikes. Since I made the plan & ordered the Esse, I rode a Yamaha TDM850 for some 4.500kms just to bridge the gap until the Esse was delivered - again a chain but w/o oiler.
Chain driven bikes are always kinda messy. Some friends have Scottoilers (quite common in Germany) installed; after some 100km for proper set-up they tend to be much less messy and the rim & framework is easier to clean.

A motorcycle chain anyway does not need lubrification as the grease for that is lifetime-enclosed between the O-Rings. The sprockets of cause do need lubrification. The grease is mainly for corrosion protection but since it is quite stick a lot of dirt is being collected. Both is sufficiently done by oil as well, however it tends to be less sticky and the oiler distributes it evenly over 1000's of kms.

I'm sure there are very good reasons for each and everyone here to stick with standard chain grease every few 100's km & cleaning when required. I just decided otherwise for this bike but I will observe closely. In case I am not happy and feel like this is not a good way of maintaining the chain drive, I will rip it off without any second thought. However the experience from my buddies show me that I might be *VERY* happy. Time will tell.

I only wanted to show how I realized it, not to start a discussion pro/con an oiler system. But, hey, this is a forum! Happy discussing!! ;D

Indeed, everyone has to do what they want, if you are happy with it that is all that matters.
