And another one bites the dust: Cezeta Motors
« on: September 19, 2020, 08:34:27 PM »

And it looks like another EV manufacturer is about to bite the dust.  (Just check out the manufacturer brand names of the sub-forums on this site. A lot of electric scooter and motorcycle manufacturers have gone out of business over the past decade). It wouldn't seem like a very good investment idea right now if you want to make a profit:  https://electricmotorcycles.news/cezeta-motors-czech-electric-scooter-business-for-sale/

Probably would've worked out better if their scooters weren't so FUGLY...

I think they look neat. The problem is the price, both for the performance you get and the ridiculous cost of some of the options (€5k to add 3 years to the warranty, €950 brake levers, €260 mirrors, €195 for a charge adapter), very Apple-esque. One of the few things that's reasonably priced is €1100 extra for double the battery capacity although when the base option is only 4kW/h a lot of people are going to want the more expensive option.

*Moderator note: Somehow we don't support Unicode?  "?ezeta Motors" when I try to rename thread to add manufacturer name for context. Okay. "Cezeta Motors" it is...

Apple prices?  An Apple extended warranty is only $300.  Those prices are more than we paid for extended Ducati warranty!

It does seem that they can continue, but don't have the resources to radically redesign the scooter for better performance and/or lower price.  "company cannot move forward without a new partner who has adequate resources to invest into improving ?ezeta’s scooter and realising its potential" although they have "Plan to realistically reduce costs by -40%".
I hope they can continue and improve. I really like the looks of Cezeta but the technology is a bit "garage made" and the price could be better.

Did Cezeta make enough of the Type 506 to even qualify as an EV manufacturer yet? Acc. to the Wikipedia page, they had been planning only 50/year, which isn't a lot to recover several years of R&D.
The link above says they have 2M CZK of capital, which converts to <$90K usd. Not exactly a lot to work with. 2.5M CZK of preorders is also just US$110K -- a grand total of ~15 scooters (assuming no options).

I wish all these entrepreneurs would quit trying.
Every failed startup in this field delays the point in time at which we'll actually have BEV motorcycles usable for more than commuting or short offroad rides.

As for basic scooter-type commuter/moped-class machines, the ones selling in China & India clearly show what people will want & pay for. It's not things like this.

...How would we have bikes if more entrepreneurs didn't try?

I wish they'd just take a long hard look at what they want to make and understand why it is that something they are making just won't sell in the numbers they're hoping to make a sustainable business. And then they would be able to entrepreneur a bit more.

Cas :)

I still think Zero is on the right track by focusing on growing the EV market by gearing their products to ICE owners who don't own an EV. (At least that is what I think they are doing.)  You need to make a product that doesn't cost too much compared with an ICE model with similar performance and one that looks like current ICE motorcycles. The problem with most motorcycle enthusiasts is that they are, and have always been, very conservative and are reluctant to embrace change. I don't think Brammo did themselves any marketing favors by making their original Enertia look kind of like a colorful plastic-covered bicycle.

Now you can certainly argue that Energica is on the right path, but perhaps their pricing and technology is a bit over the top to really appeal to the ICE crowd.  ???

I keep hearing from my ICE-owning friends that they do like the concept of electric power, but would not buy one until range increases to 200 miles at 70 mph, and/or recharging takes less than 5 minutes and can be accomplished at existing gas stations.  In other words, they want things to be just the same as when riding their current ICE bike, but with an electric motor.  ::)

So there you go. If you want decent EV sales, don't make your vehicle look like the Cezeta Motors version of a 1950's Chekhovian scooter.   ;)
