Turning 2016 13kwh DS into a DSR?
« on: May 31, 2020, 11:23:01 AM »

I have the same battery and engine in my 2016 DS as the DSR. Is there a way to play with the software and turn up the power to DRS levels?

You would have to update the motor controller since that is the actual difference between R and non R models.

And they charge just 3000$ for the motor controller?

So you had your 75-7 stock motor replaced with a 75-7R?

In 2016 both the motor and the controller (and software) were different in the DS and DSR.

I'd leave it alone.  Sell it and get a DSR if you want or wait for a new model Gen 3 DSR.

I have an old 13 DS and a 17 DSR and though the DSR does have noticeably more power, that DS in sport mode is still pretty dang quick.

When I looked at the stats for both the DS and DSR it showed the motors to be the same. Where did you find out the DS has a 75-7 and the DSR has a 7R motor? Can you link us to the info please?

Different years they had different motors and controllers.  Some of the years they share the motor... But I don't know off the top of my head.

But since they're programmed, you'd need a mainboard and controller for a DSR, at the minimum.

Oh I see you are pretty new so here's the main link to the Unofficial Service Manual maintained by forum member Brian T Rice with lots of members contributing.

https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Main_Page

And here is the part about the motors.

https://zeromanual.com/wiki/SDS_Platform/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Motor

The 2014 and 2015 SRs had the surface mounted magnet motors.  They would over heat if pushed hard with the larger controller.
In 2016 (the first year for the DSR) they brought out the IPM motor which holds in magnets in place with a cage type rotor and gives more air space between the magnets and the stator coil making it less likely to over heat.  The down side is now you have to take the motor (whole bike of course) in every 8000 miles to be commissioned ($50-$100).

The bike's VIN wouldn't show it as a DSR so resale could be tricky and of course insurance rates are higher with an "R" so you could risk
insurance fraud.  The biggest issue assuming you buy them new is: $3000ish for the motor, $3000ish for the controller, and $1000ish for a MBB (main bike board) which is the brains of the bike.

You can pick up a used DSR in the $9k-$10k range and some bikes that people need to sale go for less than that.
So for those reasons I wouldn't swap it over.

I see in this link from the Zero page that they say my 2016 DS has the interior permanent magnet motor.

I am aware of the Zero manual and have been reading it daily.

Well first, nice web site capture link I never dug that far to find the old spec pages after Zero shut them down.

Zero has taken a use up the old stuff approach from the beginning.  The S and DS kept the old 13kWh batteries to use up the old packs until 2019 when there was a 7.2 or a 14.4 option.  Now it's just the 7.2 for the S and DS.
Point being I seem to remember them using both SMM motors and IPM motors later but I'll go with the web link.
But if you'll look on that page and move over to the DSR specs you will see the other motor listed 75-7R.

go this route.  :)

Whether it's IPM or not doesn't matter (according to the manual the R models got it in 2016 but the non-R wasn't until 2017) but the fact is you don't have an R motor (which came in both IPM and non-IPM). Again according to the manual the R motors have higher temperature magnets so running a non-R motor at the higher power levels could result in damage if the motor overheats, and if you're looking for more power because the regular DS isn't enough for you that could be a likely occurrence.
