I have no idea what he's doing here other that keeping the market for used Zeros high.

He's buying wrecked Zeros, which should not impact the market for used Zeros. It does make salvage a little trickier, though.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm guessing that the powertrain parts are compromised (bricked MBB say) which is causing snags.

He seems to do some ( a lot? ) that work out okay. It seems to me that most of the ones that I see are more along the " fail " side of things.

Wow. So, that’s my 2013 DS, with a 2017 monolith replacement, stolen back in 2018, and recovered a year later from an enclosed trailer in East Oakland.

I can tell it’s a 2013 DS because of the wheels, suspension, and side plastics, and the battery is the same spec as what mine had after the first had a warranty recall.

Mine also had the white sport plastics because I liked the shape of it and the bright contrast.

What really convinced me that it’s the same bike is that mini plastic guard above the headlamp, an uncommon accessory, with the parking permit I had while working for a startup in the same building as LucasArts/ILM!

The damage to the charger inlet is also consistent, but many bikes wind up with that trouble.

I honestly never saw the bike in impound or after, because I had a lot going on for a while and not much spare budget for bike projects for the next year. I’m glad some use came of that bike, because I was worried about trying to swap the front end and rear shock as the bike aged.

Farewell, Tess. Hopefully the project succeeds and it makes for some fun rides and videos.

Well, it sounds like Rich is cornering the market on crashed Zeros. I'm not sure how this one wound up in his sights, but I wasn't paying attention to that market, either.

I tend to look for parted-out bikes on EBay for items I want to inspect and don't check CycleTrader/etc.

I do wonder how he absolutely toasted those MBBs before my bike showed up - they don't have a lot of circuit protections, but it seems like there was a direct arc through the MBB in the one caught on video. Perhaps the MBB was mismatched to the battery. (I've heard that pinouts differ between years for reasons that do not sound wise to me but then I don't trust those sources.)

It could be the DC-Dc was damaged in some way that it had one path in the tree fused so was sometimes sending 100v down where 12v belonged.  That's not supposed to happen, but if you have half a mosfet fused maybe?

The MBB doesn't really need the 12V output of the DC-DC converter. The bike will operate with a dead converter. I think this is entirely between main bus voltage and the MBB pinout.
