Smartphone connected up to Energica SS9?
« on: January 11, 2020, 02:51:17 PM »

Is  there a decent Smartphone model to use with my Esse Esse 9  with the Energica app while riding?

The one I am now using (An Android  Blu)  cannot be set to come on with the key. It wants to go to charge mode and there is no option to have it just come on with the key. None that I can find.

This  one also  times out and I see nothing in  settings where it  can be set to  NOT time out.  Its longest time is way too short for most rides (30 minutes max before the display "sleeps").

What model phone solves such problems and works well with the Energica while riding?

It's the app that sucks, not your phone. Apparently they're working on a new app.

It's the phone that causes the display to blank out in 30 minutes. It is also the phone that goes to charge mode when external power is applied. Those are the two main things that I want fixed.

FWIW, I really didn't notice any problem with the app while it was running, other than the charge station map is rather useless compared to my GPS with the help of PlugShare to enter in my own charge station locations.

I just don't like to have to turn the  phone off and  on and off separately from the bike's key and then have it go blank while I am riding. IOW, I want it to power on and off  like my Garmin GPS which is mounted on the same bike, which will mean a different phone regardless of the app running.

Bluetooth issues is why I went back to an iPhone after having an Android for a few years.

The issues you describe though are probably phone model specific rather than OS specific. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the current Android models to make a recommendation although I would guess most of the higher end models will offer the ability to tweak the various power and display settings well enough to accomplish what you want to do.

Post back here once you find a suitable Android device.

Are you happy with your Iphone on the Energica? Any complaints? What model are you using?

I understood that. However, a decent app would have an option to prevent your phone to go to sleep.

The other thing you describe doesn't exist I think. You'll always have to turn on the app manually. Though you might find a combination of apps which allows you to turn on an app (the Energica one) when the phone detects your bike's Bluetooth.

Android doesn't allow auto-wake on specific power source, you need a rooted phone to do that.

Standard Android does allow an app to remain awake while power is applied.  And it also allows you to select your bike as something that lets your phone unlock while paired.

So no idea why the app isn't staying on.

See https://trendblog.net/keep-android-screen-awake/. There is a developer option that keeps the phone screen active while on a charger. This works on any Android device (no root needed).
EDIT: There are also apps such as Trigger (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jwsoft.nfcactionlauncher) that will allow you to define actions which run on certain trigger conditions. You probably want to run the Energica app when the phone is plugged in and the bike is connected. You might still have to unlock your phone manually though (or use Smart Lock).

I’m using an iPhone 10 (smaller one) and so far I’m satisfied. Like you, I don’t use the charging station map function although I did play around with it and found that while it worked on my commute route, it didn’t really help too much when I rode to Elk Grove until I got to Elk Grove.

I think the charging station feature works best in areas with a high density of charging stations and even then, since you only get direction and distance in the bike’s display it felt like it was of limited usage. I would probably use one of the charging apps on the phone itself to identify nearby chargers.

Thanks for that info. I will give it all  try and see how it all works and will let you know here.
