2018 U.S. Motorcycle Thefts
« on: October 18, 2019, 07:55:12 PM »

I received the November 2019 issue of the AMA's American Motorcyclist magazine yesterday.  As usual, it only took me a few minutes to read the entire magazine, but I did come across an article in the magazine on page 12 titled "Motorcycle Thefts Down in 2018", which included the following comments:

Owners reported 41,674 motorcycle thefts for 2018, compared to 44,268 in 2017. California topped the list of states with the most motorcycle thefts in 2018, reporting 7,035; Florida was Number 2 with 4,279; followed by Texas, 3,073; New York 1,777; South Carolina, 1,743; North Carolina, 1,466; Indiana, 1,229; Missouri, 1,194; Georgia, 1,174; and Colorado, 1,109.

The top 10 cities for motorcycle thefts in 2018 were New York, 1,310; Los Angeles, 628; Miami, 595; Las Vegas, 540; Houston, 460; Philadelphia, 404; Austin, 329; and San Jose, 322.

Now this might be even more interesting:  The top 10 most stolen motorcycles in 2018 by brand were Honda, 8,260 thefts; Yamaha, 6,655 thefts; Suzuki, 4,882 thefts; Kawasaki, 4,861 thefts; Harley-Davidson, 4,769 thefts; Taotao ( ???) 1,851 thefts; KTM 780 thefts; Genuine Cycle, 515 thefts; Ducati, 455 thefts; and Kymco, 413 thefts.

Not a single electric motorcycle brand in sight.   ;)

Genuine Cycle http://www.genuinescooters.com/g400c.html

Taotao   https://www.walmart.com/ip/Blue-Taotao-TBR7-On-Road-Highway-229cc-Motorcycle-Electric-Start-Kick-Start/802208504?sourceid=csebr030753fad304804c8fbb6133d668c225d2&wmlspartner=bizratecom&affcmpid=2097545218&tmode=0000&veh=cse&szredirectid=15714072369022699783910080302008005

Possibly containers full of these stolen or misplaced?  Kind of makes one wonder about the rest of the figures does it not?

Maybe one of those 780 KTM was electric.

Genuine Scooters I have seen here and there, but the Taotao was a new one on me.  Those small (and probably Chinese) bikes are not real popular sellers in the U.S. I agree, it is likely that an entire shipment of Taotaos were misplaced somewhere in the country and reported as stolen to their insurance company.  When you can't sell it, push it over a cliff and report it as stolen to your insurance company.   ::)

I just noticed that it is not legal to sell in California.  Why am I not surprised.   ;)

I think if half the Zero motorcycles produced were stolen, it still wouldn't make the list.   ;D  :P

lol, guys.. The stats include MOPEDS... and these scooters dont have the same brand sales as motorcycles.

taotao is extremely popular as a moped.. its a "brand name" for the cheap chinese bikes. they far outsell yamaha Zumas and Honda Ruckus (and metro), etc.   maybe even combined. not sure on that.

Also, the reason SC is on that list is they dont require registration/tags on mopeds... right up until this year. Now that they do, we can expect those numbers to drop a bit for SC as these kids realize they cant just steal peoples scooters and ride them without getting pulled.
