Author Topic: Compression Adjustment of the Ohlins Rear Shock for the Energica Ego  (Read 904 times)

I purchased the Ohlins shock option for my 2020 Energica Ego. It's supposed to be adjustable for compression and rebound.
The rebound adjustment is a large plastic ring at the bottom of the shock.
But where is the compression adjustment?
When I turn screw surrounded by a nut at the top of the shock (shown circled below) there is no clicking sound. If I turn the nut, there is no clicking sound. I thought Ohlins adjusters always click. I'm just afraid it's not an adjuster and I'm going to unscrew something that oil will start squirting out.
Can someone confirm that the inner screw shown below is the adjuster even though it doesn't click?

Perhaps the Ohlins' website can answer your question.  Or maybe an internet search?

Personally, I haven't had much luck with Ohlins suspension components.  I bought a rear shock for my 1986 Honda VFR700FII and it dumped oil all over my garage floor within the first week of installation.  I returned the shock to Ohlins, who rebuilt it.  They must have done a good job as it is still holding up the rear end of the bike after 112K miles.

Then in 2000 I bought another Ohlins shock for my BMW R1100R. After installation it gave a really harsh ride.  So I took it to an Ohlins shock specialist who told me that the factory forgot to pressurize the shock with nitrogen.  So they did that for me and the shock worked well after that service.

That was the last Ohlins shock that I have purchased.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the S46 shock for the Energica does not have a compression adjustment. Only the S46 Ohlins shocks with the additional oil reservoir have this function.
The rebound of the Ohlins on the EGO I ride was set up properly for my weight and riding style. Suspension tuner said it was pretty much spot on, hope your results at similar.

That small screw is the nitrogen fill port for the shock. Not a user serviceable part, unless you have high pressure nitrogen and the tool to re-pressurize the shock.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I really thought the Ohlins would have compression damping just like all other high end sports bikes. But the shock fits, and I'm not sure where a reservoir would go, unless it was mounted remotely. I'll give it some time to see if it rides well.

I do have to add one thing that I like about the Ohlins shock over the stock Bitubo. The Ohlins shock can be adjusted for length, so I can raise it to quicken my steering or lower it to slow my steering.
