Planning an Electric Iron Butt
« on: July 31, 2019, 02:16:43 AM »

5 years after Terry's heavily modified Iron Butt run, technology and infrastructure has improved to the point that we can (probably) do this on a stock EV motorcycle. I wrote up a blog for the attempt: https://www.electric.motorcycles/post/planning-an-electric-iron-butt

The actual event will feature livestreams on Brandon's Facebook when available due to internet connectivity. This is such a cool time to be doing things with these bikes!

I had looked at attempting an Iron Butt on my Energica Eva 107. I live in North Carolina and would head west and then south through South Carolina and into Georgia and then return. I think it would be possible but it would be REALLY, REALLY close. If you came up to one charging station and it didn't work you were screwed. Or if someone was using it. You would have to do it at the right time of year as well. Too cold and range suffers. Too hot and your battery will get hot and slow charging down. Good Luck!!

I've done 660mi in 24 hours on the 2016 DSR ZF13 (no powertank), with 4-10kW charging depending on what component was overheating at this or that charging stop. Quite a few hours of that time period I was just sleeping on the ground because I got tired. Most accounts I've heard of the 1000mi attempt involve some level of surprise and luck recovering from having fallen asleep while operating the motorcycle... Please be careful and really, really well rested before attempting this. Have some talk radio podcasts ready or whatever it is that keeps you focused and alert.
