SR 2015 turns off when I turn the handlebar
« on: March 05, 2019, 03:38:07 PM »

Hello to everyone.

I checked the unofficial owner manual but I haven't seen this kind of breakdown...

At low speed, when I fully push the handlebar to turn right, the motorbike stop and restart (as if I quickly turn off and on the key). It happened twice the last two days. I suspect a loose wire coming from the frame to the handlebar but which one ? ;-). Someone ever had this kind of problem and managed to fix it ?
This is my only daily commute vehicle. I think I will find which wire is wrong, but it'll take some time.
I will appreciate your help !

Thanks

It's hard to find things like this on the unofficial manual, but I vaguely recall having written up the issue.

Check how the various wires tense up when changing the steering angle.

Since you say the bike stops and restarts as if you turned the ignition key, definitely check the backside of the ignition first.

Also check the steering stops on the lower triple tree clamp, to see whether it's pinching wires near the stop on each side.

Vaguely related:

Thanks for your advice. I'm pretty sure that you're close.
I'll check that in a few (lot of work for now). I'll come back to let you know.

Regards.

There was a recent discussion about loss of power due to ignition wiring issues. More than one person reported a issue.

My money is on some wires getting pinched at the steering stops.

To OP, when you turn the bars all the way to the left and right do you hear/feel the thud of metal to metal contact when the steering head contacts the stop or is it more vague.  If more vague, then some wires may be in the way and are cushioning the contact, and getting pinched in the process.

Here is the old thread:

I have tried to fix it, but I still have this problem from time to time.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that you're right. I'll take some time to fix it, when the rain will stop here !!!

Shouldn't you fix it while it's raining so you can hit the road as soon as the sun comes out?

Wait, actually, shouldn't you get a rainsuit?  ;D

Keep that bike under a cover if it's outdoors - prolonged moisture exposure on most motorcycles is troublesome.

But the Zero has particular vulnerabilities around the ignition lock and the DC converter within the bike's core.

The bike has a nice cover (with metal frame, very usefull). But I think I really need to check DC-DC converter and ignition lock before a total breakdown. I'll let you know.

Thanks !

Hi everyone,

I promised to come back for fresh news, so...

Ignition lock disassemled and cleaned (there was a bit of moisture in it, less than I expected in fact). I cleaned it with a soft metal brush. The small metal pads sealed in the white plastic case (where the contact is made when the copper part slides on it) where moving (so not really sealed in fact). they are allowed to turn, maybe to avoid stress in wires ???
Anyway, everythings ok now...

The bad news is that I had a traction loss today and a fall (rainy weather)... It hurted but nothings broken (on me ;-) ), a few hundreds dollars for the bike. That's life (and a good warning for secure riding).

Thanks to you all and take care.

Glad you got it sorted out and sorry to hear about your mishap.  I've learned the hard way too that I need to be much more diligent on the Zero when riding in wet conditions than with an ICE bike due to the much higher torque.  Cold weather and wet roads are a bad combination for the Zero.
