Anyone used FX batteries for other things?
« on: September 25, 2018, 10:38:10 AM »

With my DC-DC converter going out it got me thinking of things I could run using a FX type battery and a Sevcon reducer to power 12 volt things.
Quite simply a 12 volt trolling motor for a kayak.  It's about three times the energy as a deep cycle lead acid battery at 45ish pounds, right?  Or not quite that much I could find a conversion with a quick search.
I saw the things needs an enable signal but could that be jumped by a switch or would it need a MBB type board?

I don't know it struck me as a interesting second use for the batteries.

Clearly, it could be done. But I'm thinking anything you'd do with it, there's a better solution for. You can purchase automotive Li-ion batteries OTC and use one in your light watercraft if you want. Personally I'd think a UPS would be a good place for a nice Li-ion battery -- but those already exist, too (though that market seems to be slow to come around to the Li-ion solution, for whatever reason). 12V supply for an RV? Sure, but again, Li-ion automotive batteries are already available, and more conventional, so bracketry, accessories, etc. would be easier to find.

The fly in the ointment is having to have the DC-DC converter to give you 12V. That's going to limit the power you have available at any given time.

Also, isn't the best use in your bike?

Well the funny part is I don't currently have either item (may change Friday)  I've seen a good deal on an FX and been looking at kayaks for a little bit now and have found used ones already setup with trolling motors.
Now dad has a full sized fish/ski boat with a trolling motor on it and a $150ish deep cycle battery would get it going for a few hours but they would only last a couple years before really dying back to very short run times.
I have two nice slow rivers near me with a nice lake about an hour away.  My idea was to use the Zero's battery to go up the river about as far as I could and then float/fish back down to the truck thus eliminating the need for two trucks and two people to get me and the boat back.
Using the Zero's battery just multi functions the bike.  I couldn't see buying a high dollar Li ion just for the boat
Now a video I watched showed a 55lb thrust motor pulling 25 to 30 amps max.  At 13 volts that would be around 450 watts which would be under the 500W max of the Sevcon Zero uses now.

I agree there are easier options but the main idea was to get other uses out of the removable FX batteries.  Which means I would have to buy a FX as well  :)
