Here is an interesting video showing ten electric aircraft.  They are all kind of cool, but still have a way to go before they start carrying paying passengers.  I looks like we still need much better batteries to keep these things in the air for very long:

The business section of my newspaper today, in an article written by Peter Holley of the Washington Post, reports that Rolls-Royce plans to build a battery-powered vertical take-off and landing aircraft as soon as the early 2020's.  It would have a 250 mph top speed and be able to carry five passengers a distance of 500 miles.  Upon reading this, I thought they must know more about future battery improvements than I do.  ;)
