Insurance recommendations
« on: June 30, 2018, 06:03:02 AM »

I feel like this should have been covered so please direct me if I've missed it. I did a search and found some info that was 9 years old, but that was about it.

I have my home and cars insured with Travelers, but they don't insure bikes, so I have 4 of my bikes (those that are basically ride-able) insured with Progressive. I talked to my broker and now it seems that Progressive will not insure electric motorcycles ("limited market with high risk"). They did find some small company that I had never heard of (American Modern) that wanted to charge me $490/yr which I feel is a lot for one bike, it's a hell of a lot more than I pay for my Ducati 748.

I'm in Washington state in the US, I have a good driving record, I just bought a 2018 DSR. What do you recommend for insurance? I hope to put home, auto, and bikes all under the same if possible.

Partial answer: Geico was better than progressive for ICE motos. As for electric moto coverage I can't say, because my main insurance with USAA requires me to use Progressive to keep my USAA umbrella. No I am not happy about it. USAA lost their way when they extended beyond military.
So check out Geico.

I have my 2013 FX, 2003 SV 650, and 1984 Kawasaki 750 Turbo insured with Progressive.
My 2016 SR is insured with Foremost through AARP. I believe that my Progressive
policy is in the $300 a year range. They wanted more than double that for just the SR.
The AARP policy is somewhere in the neighborhood of your quote. When it came time to
renew the SR, Progressive had come down somewhat but was still quite a bit higher
than Foremost with less coverage. When I asked Foremost about moving the
Progressive bikes over, THEY wedd about double what Progressive was charging.
My Progressive agent is also a Foremost agent. He checked and couldn't touch what I
was paying Foremost through AARP.

I'm paying just over $300 a year for my 2016 SR with Allstate in California. I also have auto and home policies with them. That might include a discount for taking the CHP training course.

I have State Farm.  They had to do some research since Zero was not in their database but I have reasonable rates.  My MSF instructor also uses State Farm and had concluded that they had the cheapest coverage for motorcycles locally at least.

Update:

Progressive will insure it. They have a book that they look into that lists "unacceptable vehicles" or something like that. And guess what's listed in there "electric bikes". This listing causes a lot of confusion. This does not mean electric motorcycles, it means electric bicycles, but this is not widely understood.

I got a quote from my broker for $259.87/yr to add the Zero to the other 3 bikes I have insured with them. By the way I got a quote directly from Progressive (since I was already on the phone with them) and it was more than $1,000/yr for the same coverage.

Progressive has been insuring my electric motorcycles since 2009. I was being charged only $5 a year for my 2009 Electric Motorsport GPR-S.  However, every year the premium has increased.  Now I am paying $95 a year for my 2018 S - which is more than I am paying for my 2015 BMW R1200RS.  I might add that I only have 250K/500K liability insurance and do not have collision or other insurance that would cover my bike for physical damage.
