Fork bleeders for WP fork on Alta Motors Redshift SM
« on: April 08, 2018, 05:23:39 AM »

Well, after trying a handful of M4-sized fork bleeders on the WP fork of my 2017 Alta Motors Redshift SM, I finally found bleeders that fit:

MojoMotoSport KTM Fork Bleeders MOJO-KTM-FB
https://mojomotosport.com/collections/orange-ktm-parts/products/ktm-fork-bleeders-cnc-billet-anodized-aluminum

Unlike all of the other bleeders that I tried, the Mojo ones are long enough to fit into the deep bleed holes of the Redshift's WP fork. The Mojo bleeders are grabbing about 3-4 threads (3-4 turns), versus the other bleeders I tried grabbing only 1 thread (1 turn).

I've only gone on one short ride since installing them, so i can't speak to these bleeders leaking or whatnot, but I'll report back in the near future after putting in some miles if any of y'all are interested.

I have no affiliation with Mojo other than being a happy customer. I had some other Mojo parts on my KTM 625 SMC some years ago, and those parts worked fine (and looked great).

System Tech Racing also makes a set that will work for the Alta:

These will work on the SM and the 4CS forks on the 2017 MX and 2018 EX/MX
http://www.systemtechracing.com/product_p/10-22.htm

This set will work on the WP AER forks that come standard on the MXR
http://www.systemtechracing.com/product_p/10-25.htm

The advantage with the STR bleeders is that they have a dual sealing system. The dual seal provides a seal against pressure releasing from the forks as well as pressure being drawn into the forks on extension. A side bonus is that all of John's products are manufactured right here in Colorado :)

John also makes a front disc guard, brake reservoir extension, inline brake cooler, and a few other items that work well on the Alta Redshift models.

Thanks for pointing these out, Scott. The STR bleeders look awesome, but...

The STR 10-22 model bleeders for 4CS forks do NOT work on the SM forks — unless you call grabbing only one thread working. They're too short. They were the first ones I tried, because I like how they're triple-sealed. I also tried bleeders from Motion Pro (two different models) and Works Connection — also too short.

The problem with the SM fork is that (a) its fork caps are thick, so you need a bleeder with a small-diameter barrel to fit through the deep hole in the fork cap, and (b) the female threads start even deeper down the bleed hole underneath the fork cap, so you need a bleeder with a longer threaded portion.

Looking closely at the STR website now, I wonder if the 10-21 model would fit the SM fork. It seems to have a longer threaded portion than the 10-22 model that you pointed out, and its multi-diameter barrel looks like it will clear the fork cap:

10-22

10-22

Looking at these photos side-by-side, I prolly should've tried the 10-21 model instead of the 10-22.

Scott, I see that you sell the 10-21 model (which you list as "Open Cartridge/Closed") in addition to the 10-22. Do you have an SM fork you can try them on? If not, would you consider selling me a set of the 10-21? If they work on my SM, I'll post a picture here. If they don't work, can I send them back without paying your 15% restocking fee?

Thanks!

[Update: STR changed its website and swapped out photos. I updated this post to use the photos that show threading.]

I have a supermoto here. I will try a couple of sets and let you know what works best.

I went ahead and purchased the STR 10-21 model. The STR bleeder fits into the Redshift SM fork's bleed hole with 2.5 turns (two and half threads) versus the Mojo bleeder's 3.7 turns.

With that said, two and half threads worth of insertion is probably good enough to keep the STR bleeder in place without stripping the threads.
