ALTA SM-R.... WHEN ?
« on: February 16, 2018, 11:44:12 PM »

I made an inquiry with Alta Motors on Facebook yesterday....  Asked when the SM-R would be available....  Alta advised that nothing is currently planned....

That is the same info that we (dealers) have. The 2018 orders have been placed and the only "R" model available was the MXR. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but I would not expect anything this riding season.

I have the SM and love it, range is okay but we've talked about that already, I'd be lying if I said I had not thought about buying the MX-R and putting my SM wheels and forks on it, how bada$$ would that be, illegal as heck on the street but they'd have to catch me:)  I was getting caught up in all the new specs on the MX-R, which are great but I took the bike out yesterday and am still thrilled with the performance from the old girl...

I'm curious to know why you think it would be illegal.

The MX and MX-R are strictly off road-- no turn indicators, no running lights, no brake light no DOT approval for street use.  Electric or not, it would be near impossible to get the MX-R approved for street use in California, even with proper modifications....

I was going to disagree with you until you said "in California".
I am a big fan of making non-street vehicles into street vehicles... like my CR500 supermoto. It doesnt get more "this shouldnt be on the street" than that. lol

We've been converting dirtbikes to street legal here for years, I meant illegal because I'd just blast around on the nearby mtn roads here without any lights:)

The current waive of ALTA SM's are not selling....  Based on even lower prices (now down to $12995) and the very low production numbers that are showing (based on VIN)....  Build the inevitable SM-R and I will buy tomorrow....  Even if I have to travel to Modesto (these guys seem nice) to buy one....  SF BMW is not an option because they have no facilities for trailering (ridiculous)....  AND you don't have a store in San Jose, the center of the tech universe !!!!

When I bought my used Royal Enfield from CalMoto in Mountain View, I didn't want to ride it home as I rode to the shop on one of my other bikes.  So for free, they called up a local motorcycle transport hauler who delivered it to my house 40 miles away shortly after I arrived back home. (He had a really cool pickup outfitted with a hydraulic system that lifted the bike off of the truck bed and gently dropped it on to the pavement at the end of his truck.) I would think that SF BMW could do that for you as part of the sale. I believe that the charge for a transport like that is around $100, depending upon the distance.

CalMoto in Mt. View is in the business....  When I bought my Beemer from them-- I got loaners, free pick-up, etc....  Love them....  When I asked SF BMW about delivery they said they don't do that ????  Got a call a couple of days later saying one of their guys could do me a favor and drop it off in his personal pick-up truck for $100 !!!!  No thank you....  I don't want to be dependent on a dealer that can not perform.  If I have problems, I want to be able to trailer in.  Not to mention, it would be nice to purchase from a dealer that I can drive home from !!!!

I've sort of flip flopped on this one, honestly, to me, all the SM needs is faster charging and more range, put a larger battery in it and drop the slow on-board charger.
