IRS electric motorcycle purchase rebate
« on: June 27, 2018, 01:55:41 AM »

On May 15 I sent in a 2017 amended tax return requesting a 10% rebate from the IRS for purchasing my 2018 Zero last November. Yesterday June 25 I received a check in the mail from the Treasury Department for $1,803, the cost of my Zero + Power Tank + various Zero factory accessories, such as the windshield and the rear luggage rack.  :)

It certainly was nice of Congress to reinstate this electric motorcycle rebate, even if it was apparently intended to reward a previous purchase, instead of being an incentive to purchase an new EV.  We can only hope that Congress will do the same thing when passing a new tax bill in the future and reward those purchasing a qualifying electric motorcycle this year with another 10% rebate next year.  But knowing Congress, I wouldn't make any purchase decisions based upon something that they might or might not do in the future.  ::)

I might add that the IRS did not request any supporting information, such as my purchase agreement, or documentation substantiating that my Zero model qualified for the rebate, before sending me the check.

Congrats Richard230 on your tax return.

I also received mine about 1.5 months ago. It pretty much took the 8 weeks to get the check. Was a nice surprise especially after also getting the 1200 visa gift card last year from Zero since the tax credit was not there. In my case they wanted the form I got from Zero stating it was a electric vehicle as well as the bill of sale. I didn’t send it in originally and they sent me  my paperwork back asking for those extra documents. Seems like each case might be different. Are you going to invest it in the Zero?  I invested mine in a Diginow 2.5v since the charge tank is not backwards compatible to the ‘17’s and wont be for some time after an email from Zero.

I bought my Zero this calendar year. Am I correct that Uncle Sam has no tax credit for me?

I am investing the money in my share of my daughter's new home that she had to buy or get kicked out of that home that she has been renting for the past 10 years.  Zero's money is worth about 1/10 of a "point" of her loan. Her 2012 Zero buyback also went toward the closing costs. We each still have a Zero and are unlikely to buy a new one any time soon.

That is correct.  But keep any eye on next year's tax bill, they might retroactively bring it back again for purchases made this year.
