Major surgery, major expense: SR/F Dual J1772 charging
« on: October 26, 2021, 08:39:54 AM »

So...  My SR/F, of which I've whined about its niggles at times, is headed for major surgery.  I'm embarking upon the Charge Tank (uncommon in North America, as our J1772 chargers tend to be 6kW), combined with eMoto Design's DJ-RapidCharge: https://www.emotodesign.com/product-page/the-rapid-recharge-system

It's a big outlay, all totalling nearly a quarter of the purchase price of the bike.  But charging in an hour, via two J-plugs?  Okay, let's do it.  8)

I'll report back with the results.  Just pulled the trigger on part of the transaction earlier this evening.  Yikes!

What a neat kit! It all fits inside cleanly. It's cool that it'll work off one plug at a 12 kW station. Also, based on the 5000-mile trip report on Facebook it looks like most dual plug stations don't current-share between the two plugs so you actually do get 12 kW. Are you planning a road trip?

I will confirm firsthand that Scott's system works very well and, if I was going to own a Zero, that's the direction I'd go. If you're ok adding $5k onto the purchase price you will be pleased with the results.

I feel like you guys in the States have been short-changed by the charging infrastructure :| For us over here on the other side of the pond it's just plug-and-play and 1hr charge times...

Do you do a lot of long distance riding to need that level of charging?   And do you have the charging infrastructure where you ride to be sure that two separate/independent chargers will be available?   If I understand correctly, some chargers with two outlets are actually shared and when both are used they slow each other down.

Seems to me if they could make the charging port have DCFC or CCS Combo it would be far more useful.   Maybe an Energica would be a better investment for you?

We have, but at least we don't have to lug our cables around with us.

Works out well until the junkies learn that the copper isn't energized on the ChargePoint bollards.  :o  (for L2 anyways... and L2 charging bikes like Zero models tend to carry extra cables and adapters anyhow)

That's going to become a major problem in short order. Pikeys nick any unguarded copper they can get their hands on.

That is just the new wireless charging.   Even Tesla has it.

Thanks, Morgan!  Yeah, it's a big upload of cash.  I've spent $4k, with about $500 to go for the Charge Tank installation.  I'll do the Double-J install myself.

What got me to the "yes" outcome was the consideration that this 20% increase in the purchase price gets me 1-hour charging from double-J or Tesla Destination, along with the ability to use two 120V outlets for 3kW charging, and eventually 1-hour charging from NEMA 14-50 in RV parks.  That's a *lot* of additional versatility.  The result is that this bike is gonna go a whole lot further from home!

Where I live (Colorado), the vast majority of EV charge stations are 6kW J1772.  So yeah, this appeals to me.   8)

Hey all,

Just a quick follow-up: it works!!!

The only major issues I encountered were some weak crimps on the connectors in the eMoto Dub-J kit, resulting in wires pulling loose from the connectors and requiring some triage.  Now that I've got it going, this is fantastic!!!

I only wish the majority of Chargepoint stations actually *worked*.  There's still waaaaay too much messing around with broken stations here in the USA, at least where I am in Colorado.  But when they work, oh, wow!!!

Ride on,

It's fantastic getting that 11.5kW charging isn't it! Totally changes your ideas about where you want to go (or even whether you want to go!)
Knackered AC charging is sadly not just limited to the States, plenty useless broken ones over in Blighty too. And they all require a stupid app.

That's a really cool solution, glad to know it's out there!
