I currently have a 2021 SR with charge tank, which accepts a J-1772 plug. From what I understand, the Charge Tank is rated for 6kW. What happens if I connect it to a J-1772 rated at more than 6kW? For example, there's an 80A TeslaTap (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TQDKZQC/) that claims it would allow me to visit any Tesla charger, including Destination chargers. 80A @ 220V gives 17.6kW. Would I damage the SR's charge tank by plugging it into such a charger using the TeslaTap?

I'm assuming this would not be a problem, because even if the Charge Tank really can't take more than 6kW, then it would be smart enough to draw only 6kW even on a charger that can offer up to 17.6kW. But of course if I'm wrong I'd have a very expensive problem on my hands.

A similar question arises for an SR/F: the Premium is rated for 6kW, plus one can get a 6kW charge tank; together capable of 12kW.... but what if I skip the Charge Tank and just plug a 12kW J-1772 into the Premium without the charge tank?

Thanks!

What happens when you plug a 100 watt bulb into at 15 amp circuit?

The magic of a level two charging is that the bike will charge at the maximum it can, within the ability of the charge station.  A standard Charge Tank can only do 6kW, so it'll max out at 6kW.  But also, if you plug into a station that only can do 3kW, it'll only pull 3kW, and not trip the station's circuit.

LOL. Good point.

I'm a software guy. It's been a long time since I've thought about circuits.

Current is measured in amps.

The current rating (amps)  on a supply is the maximum rating. Anything under that is fine.

The current rating on the equipment end is how much it will draw from that supply. You want that to be LESS than the supply can handle.

IOW, you may use a billon amp charge station with no issues at all.

But if you use a one amp charge station, you will then have a big problem.

Watts is a power rating. Works the same way as far as ratings are concerned.

IOW, it is okay to draw 6 KW from  a 12KW charge station.

It is not okay to draw 12KW from a 6KW outlet.

But J-1772 (J plugs) use a pilot signal that will automatically reduce YOUR charger so there is no overload. So you should then draw 6KW with your 12KW charge tank if the charge station can only handle six KW. It will take twice the time to charge, but that is better than a tripped circuit breaker and then have no charge at all.
