Extended warranty offered for my Zero FX at my dealership
« on: September 08, 2017, 04:49:10 AM »

So when I pick up my new, 2017 6.5 KW (mod) bike in a few days at the dealership, I can purchase an extended warranty on top of the standard factory 2 year bike and 5 year battery warranty.  They are telling me it would be $ 1,000 for two additional years and $ 1,350 for 3 additional years of total coverage.  I see myself in UT for at least 5 + more years and I'm seriously considering buying it.  It sounds great to have 4 or 5 years of total warranty coverage.  What do you all think?

As you probably know, the warranty is offered by a third party, *not* Zero.  Make sure you read it carefully, and that it includes everything on the bike.

Right.  I'm most certainly aware the extended is not done by Zero and I will make sure I go over the warranty carefully.  As interested in it as I am, I realize the dealership won't have the incentive to work on the bike like they would if they were getting paid by the factory.  However, if the extended warranty (by 3rd party) really is similar in coverage as the factory and I feel ok about the 3rd party...it seems like a good deal.  I'll get all the details before deciding.

I am two years and 2,200 miles into my 2015 FX and so far I've spent $0 on repairs.  Shy of a failed battery, I can't imagine spending $1,000+ on any repairs in the future.  Does the extension add to the 5 year battery warranty or just the 2 year general warranty?  If it doesn't add to the battery warranty, then it would be redundant to the coverage you already have for the most expensive parts.

Given the terrible history of charger failures (I see 2 new ones in the forum today), if one had to replace one out of warranty, I'm guessing it'd be more than $1200 to replace just that.

being an aftermarket warranty, they're not going to cover electrical device issues....
so...  everything you have to worry about on the bike would not be covered anyway.

dont get it.

I can only imagine that this is similar ( if not exactly the same ) as extended warranties sold by automotive dealers.
The only thing I have ever heard about these is DO NOT BUY them. Find a nice investment for the money that way,
it will ( hopefully ) grow and you will have the cash if needed. Besides, unless you are paying cash for the entire package,
you will be financing this costing you substantially more than the $1,000~$1,300.

In my experience it's not worth it.

In five years you will either have gotten on other bike or will be working on it yourself. Spend the money on getting more chargers.

I think the FX charger has been pretty solid.  The failures being reported are almost all S/DS, with the worst being the 2014 model year.

UPDATE: The posts below are proving me wrong...  Still far fewer reports with FX, but apparently it's not entirely  immune from charger issues.

My 2015 FX charger failed. Or maybe it's in the wiring. They don't know and I'm happy to use the Quiq charger so I can keep riding.

It's weird. Dealer replaced the charger and it still wouldn't work. He replaced the fuse and got a reading, but it's putting out too much voltage, so apparently the bike won't accept it. Zero told him it needs a whole new wiring harness. As the dealer is in the process of moving, and he really doesn't want to do it (I don't blame him), and he's not sure if Zero will cover it (just over two years old), and I got a brand new Quiq charger at half price, I'm just going to keep riding it like this for now. (Anyone seen the likes of this before?)

Thanks for the info guys!  My Zero dealer (owner) said that it would cover everything that the Zero Factory warranty covered with his dealership (also covers the Quick charger I bought) and I'm not looking to move for a lengthy period.   So it would be factory-like warranty for three additional years after the original two and my son and I plan to ride frequently, so I went with it.  My thinking is that just one internal charger issue would pretty much make it worth it, besides whatever else could go wrong in the additional three years.

My dealer has ordered a warranty replacement on board charger for my 1 1/2 year old FX. They also found a battery issue and are going to replace one. Not sure what they found, isolation I guess, I'm riding it and charging external while waiting for parts, looking at log files too. New firmware causes an overall display flash maybe 16 times and then stops then repeats. Have seen errors 6 and 20 but it seems to clear and then run. Firmware version went from 40 to 51. All a bit unnerving.
