USB Charger / SAE connector location?
« on: June 12, 2017, 06:51:02 AM »

HI,

Im a new member and owner of a 2016 DSR. I would like to add a USB charger to it...read some post... but can not figure out if I need to remove the seat and "tank" plastics to access the SAE connector. I bought a charger at Cycle Gear and it has a SAE connector and would like to just plug and play it... hopefully don't have to remove a lot of parts... not familiar with this motorcycle yet.

Where is the SAE connector?

Pictures and/or video will help a lot... thanks.

I found the same info... but other post said you can access it near the headlight, without removing the seat and "tank"... plus a guy at the dealership said he removed the headlight housing and found it. I just don't want to remove several parts to find the connection... plus if you use the Zero cigaret lighter option...($50), the wire attached to it looks maybe 12 inches long...so the connection should be near the front.. maybe.

is the location of the SAE connector on a 2016 DSR in a different place?... a few old post have different locations and ways to access it.

The SAE connector may or may not be accessible, it is tucked out of the way. Remove the seat, and cowl, is an easy task you should have those tools with you anyways if you ever need to work on a bike roadside because of some problem. If you first want to try removing the headlight and the dash that's easy to try. You are hoping that to remove the headlight and dash will give you a better look and maybe see into the cowl area without having to open the cowl area?  There is a chance the SAE connector is loose in just the right spot for you to see it from the headlight area?    100% success if you remove the seat and cowl, because that is where the wiring is. Removing also the headlight will help installing any accessory but it is not the only step in the process.

What I carry with me always on my Zero:
$6- T45 bit for the seat bolt https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E60O4C
$38- Midget wrench kit for metric motorbikes https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BU96ENQ

Also I carry a 6mm and 8mm allen key wrench because the midget wrench i.e. is good for the torque of the seat bolts (16lb-ft) but not the handlebar clamps (19lb-ft).

This isn't weird, everyone with a Zero should know how to do these things, but it is good to ask questions first and not randomly take apart a $15,000 motorbike!  On the Zero, most things you take apart can be put back together easily if you are using a wrench. When you use a wire cutters or electricity "tap" and start making changes to wiring directly because you are afraid of a few nuts or bolts, that is when things get crazy and bad very quickly.

buy this http://www.ebay.com/itm/112166615810
when you get it, remove the seat, then remove the plastic covering where the "tank bag" is sitting
the sae connecter is just under that, plug it in and wire it wherever you want it mounted.
done.

Thank you all for the great info, links and suggestions... will work on it tomorrow afternoon... will go for a ride in the morning... before we hit 100 degrees in the afternoon... wow and its only June.

I should have a few of the tools that I need... but definitely will look into the ones that you suggested.

Do you know why most, if not all, the USB connectors that I have found are square or box shape? the ones with a cord and a USB connector are all so far square shape... the round ones (the one I want to instal and use the handle bar opening) don't have a cord or have one but not a SAE connector... not a big deal... I can add the SAE connector... but just weird that so far I can not find a round one.

Maybe I install a cigarette lighter plug... and have the option of using it with several accessories... and it has a cord with a SAE connector... ready.

thank you again.

Took the seat and plastics off.. found the SAE connector...installed the new 12V adapter... secured cables and put all back together... will take it for a ride tomorrow.  Thank you all for the info.
