Windscreen - VStream?
« on: September 26, 2016, 12:59:05 AM »

Has anyone tried or have thoughts on adapting one of these National Cycle VStream screens for the Zero D/S/SR?

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/national-cycle-vstream-tall-touring-windscreen-kawasaki-concours-14-2008-2014

I saw one installed on a Kawasaki parked next to my SR, and it looked like it could be a good fit for the SR. Being 24" tall and pretty wide where it matters seems nice for tall riders. I have an aftermarket screen that is a little larger than the touring from Zero and it is too small for me.

Thoughts?

That screen on the Concours is integrated to the fairing. Won't work on a Zero.

What do you mean by "integrated"? Yes, it is meant to be attached to a bracket that is specific to the Concours, but other than that, what would make it "not work" on the Zero?

It attaches directly to the fixed fairing.

Doesn't it attach to a bracket with 4 (or maybe 6) bolts? It does not attach the fairing itself, I don't think... I think it is adjustable up and down via the brackets. I'll need a custom adapter to match the hole pattern if I decide to reuse the holes, or I can drill my own holes to match whatever bracket I would come-up with.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but want to understand which part you have doubts about and why, so I can rule out that screen if it is not suitable.

I've had faired bikes like that. On a naked bike, like the zeroes, a windshield attaches via brackets to the handlebar. On a bike with a fixed full fairing, the windshield bolts directly to the fairing. An aftermarket shield is made to fit. You will probably have a very hard time adapting it to handlebar mounts. The stock shield for the Concours probably lies flat on the fairing and that aftermarket uses risers to create more of an air gap. IMO, you'd be better off spending that kind of cash on a windshield meant for handlebar mounting. (Or maybe fit a full fairing? Now there's a project!) If you do manage to adapt that shield, please share! Maybe it is a good idea.

Found this video, from the 2m 18s mark:

https://youtu.be/LDH4R215xmk?t=2m18s

One can see how the screen is attached with 4 volts to a bracket. Yes, it is not attached to the handlebars, so it does not move left/right, I guess this is what you refer as "attaches to the fairing".  I measured the other day as my SR was parked next to the Concours, that the bottom of the cutout on the VStream is at about the same height as the top of the headlight on the SR. So I figured the screen would fit nicely on the SR, provided I could come-up with a suitable bracket: most likely would use a 4-point setup, with the upper two points at the handlebars and attached to the screen higher than where the screen is attached on the Concourse, and the lower two attached at the fork using the existing holes on the screen. That would make it more stable, I think. I'll try to attach a photo later.

The point is that a windscreen designed around a faired motorcycle is not going to have the same effect on a naked bike. The elaborate airflow they're illustrating happens because the fairing is there under the windscreen already shaping the air in that direction.

You'll also have to arrange a mount yourself with a little fabrication.

Honestly, if you bought such a windscreen used on Craigslist, it'd probably be worth it, but the retail price would be a waste compared to a universal fit windscreen.

Just ordered one. Will let you know how I find it once I have it installed, which should be in a week or so.

From eyeballing it vs. the 18" cheap Chinese screen I have now (which is very similar to the Zero touring screen in dimensions), it should fit nicely. It is 6" taller than my screen and I am not sure if it will be enough to fully protect me upright (still below my eyes) but I guestimate I would only need a very gentle duck instead of the painful position I have to assume now to hide from the wind on the highway. Plus there is always the option to add an extension if it needs just that little bit of extra height to be perfect.

I estimate the upper mounting holes will line-up with the brackets I have on my current windshield, so should be able to reuse them. I'll have to figure out some way to attach the bottom, probably will attach it to the headlight or the forks, provided it works otherwise aerodynamically.

Did this work? I think you may have posted about it on another thread, just wanted to see whether it was workable.

Yes, I posted some photos in the 'which screen is OK' thread.

http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4673

Not sure how to link to a specific post - see page 6 of that thread, post 88, for some photos.

I like it, but still have not made permanent lower brackets.

I like how the bike rides with a smaller screen better. But the big screen sure is nice in the cold months and always on the highway ...

And this

http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4673.msg48394#msg48394

I have fine-tuned the position a bit more compared to the photos there, but close enough to get the idea. With the screen supported on top of the headlight and secured to it with two bungees, it feel quite sturdy. I think I will make a small bracket from aluminum and bolt it to the headlight for an even sturdier fit.

Rode the bike yesterday in 55-58F weather (about the coldest I enjoy in my mostly summer gear with some layers), and it was great.

Thanks for that. Yes, I kept tuning my install in ways that weren't visible in my photos.

I need to start a new thread for why I'm bringing this up now (may as well do that now)...
