Hi-Vis Promotion for the Forum
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:55:35 AM »

Since I'll be commuting into London every day on my 2014 DS, I thought it would be interesting to see if it might attract a few more members to this forum:

Sweet.

I am torn because while a good thing, people use the 'no gas tax paid' as hate for electric vehicles.

The truth is that even people that pay gas tax and other user fees like tolls and registration only cover ~1/3 or the cost of the roads nation wide.

The truth is that users do not pay for the cost. Roads are government subsidized by everyone.   Other taxes like sales and property tax pay for the roads.

The Tax Foundation has the best data on this.

Killroy, bear in mind that (unless I dreamt it) Osbourne recently announced changes to the VED (aka Road Tax) funding meaning it would go directly to road maintenance & development rather than into the general kitty.

Nice idea. I would probably just go with the website name/logo personally.  I made a few of these years ago for a local bike forum and it was quite successful, attracting a number of new members.  We ended up getting sponsorship from the local radio stations road safety campaign and gave out about 300 for free.

Still need 2/3rds more revenue to cover road spending.  When you do the math, gas tax is really low.

Petrol wouldn't work as a double entendre and gas just sounds too American for London I'm afraid. I've often wondered why Americans call petrol 'gas.' It's a liquid. It's not like you fill your tank with methane... Even when it's vapourised before combustion, it isn't really gas. Petrol's boiling point is 95 Celsius.

Petrol is currently at £1 a litre here in the UK. Fuel duty and VAT constitute 75% of that cost. If you are a higher rate tax payer, income tax and national insurance add up to 51%. Taking those four taxes into account you are paying about 88% tax at the petrol pump. In other terms, £60 of fuel at the pump has cost you £122 of your gross salary for £15 worth of petrol.

It's short for gasoline, a refined petroleum product.

It makes about as much sense as calling gasoline "petrol" (given that petroleum can be refined into a huge variety of oil-based products) .. ie not a lot.

D'oh! I really should have known that promotech... In fact I'm sure I did once! Wrong time of day when I posted. Thanks for setting that straight.

I was wondering if I should have put a mildly political message on the vest. Maybe something different for vest version two!

I'm just hoping that at least one or two folks decide to check this forum out courtesy of the vest. I'm also looking forward to what they say.

"Who is that nutter riding around London in a hiviz, on a bike that doesn't go brum, going on about torque and tax?"

Answer: "He goes by the name of..."

Should be good for a giggle. [emoji6]
