New Zero S specs.
« on: August 04, 2009, 06:41:41 AM »

The newest specs for the Zero S are showing that it is slower, heavier and has a shorter range than previously noted. It is looking a lot more like the Brammo Enertia now. I thought I had seen somewhere that the 0-60 times were around 4 seconds. I am wondering what it is now. Is this Zero's idea of new and improved or is a truth in advertising issue? Anyone have any idea of what is behind the new specs?

Hey ultrarnr,

Thanks for your post, I have the same questions you do about the S but from the specs I would say the S still stands above the Brammo performance wise (torque, acceleration).  Have you test ridden the Brammo or the S?  If so what did you think?

I have not ridden either bike. The range on the Brammo is too short for me. They list the max range as 45 miles if you are ridding at 25 MPH. I assume that range can easily be cut in half if you are riding at highway speeds. Most of my commute is between 35-55 MPH. I also don't think you can put saddle bags on the Brammo. I definitly need it to carry stuff for commuting. Right now my biggest concern with the Zero S is when it will be shipped. This will actually be my first motorcycle. I thought it would be great to ride this summer. But month after month of shipping delays mean I am obviously not going to be riding it this summer. Not sure how much longer I will wait before canceling and buying something that is actually available to customers. Zero can easily keep trying to upgrade the S and not actually ship until next year.

I don't know about the range issue, but at least I can provide video evidence that the Brammo Enertia can handle saddle bags: See this article, which links to the vid.

Hey Guys:

Talked to Jeff at ZERO yesterday and got some scoop on the change in specs. ZERO was not happy with there off the line
performance so they geared the bike down to increase the off the line performance. That is why the top speed and range have decreased. The weight issue is due to the changes from prototype to final design as in the battery case is now made of
metal instead of plastic and they made some more changes to mounting connections for saddlebags to give a more robust mounting surface. Basically we are seeing the final design changes now and that is why the specs have been changed.

There is a lot of confusing and conflicting information about the Zero S and its configuration and performance out there. The overall weight of the S was updated on their web site and battery weight and frame weight were a part of this. But Zero never changed the weight of the battery and frame to reflect this on their web site. In one of the videos about the S, Neil claims a 0-60 time of around four seconds. That is pretty fast even by ICE bike standards. I am wondering if that was even close to being true if Zero had to change the sprocket configuration at the last minute to improve acceleration. Looking at the specs on their web site the front sprocket changed from 17T to a 15T but it is now back to a 17T even for the DS version. Also heard that the battery and motor are capable of getting the bike to 80MPH  but range would really suffer. Really true? Why not allow riders to determine range based on how they ride. Just like with ICE vehicles the faster you go the less range you have. The Alltec controllers are programmable so if this limitation on speed is software related I am sure someone out there will figure out how to change the setting. (probably invalidate the warrenty though) The forum issue about regen certainly has me confused. A guy calls Zero, and the rep brings up the subject of regen and then it sounds like the two of them talked about it for quite awhile. And now the rep was misquoted???

There are a lot of articles on the Zero S on the web and I think it is best to ignore all of them. Until people get the final version of the S and ride it I don't think we really have any idea of how it is configured or what its performance is like.

I agree for the most part. I think we have an idea of performance, just sounds like things are still changing with the bike. We are getting bits and pieces of information on a bike no one owns yet. Most people probably are not dissecting the information as much as we are. If Zero is over promising they will have some PR work to do. But my hunch is most are not looking that close yet.
