Noise Control Helmet by SENA
« on: October 16, 2015, 09:13:45 AM »

Have you guys seen this new helmet from SENA?

SENA Noise Control Helmet

Noise canceling for a motorcycle helmet sounds awesome! I love how they are quick to make it clear that you still hear the engine noise...haha....which of course is non existent for electrics.

With the addition of the bluetooth module it would be nice to be able to listen to music at lower volumes.

Without the bluetooth module or with it off it would be interesting to see what the ride would be like on an electric bike without any wind noise.

No price or availability listed....my bet is they are targeting early spring 2016.  Depending on the price I might have to give this helmet a try.

Definitely needs pinlock though!

This looks great! Hanging out to see if it gets ECE22.05 or AU/NZ approval.

That bad boy's not going to be cheap. They're going to take a LOT of your money!

I'll still take one in a heartbeat if it means I can stop wearing earplugs.

600 - 800 according to their Facebook page. Not bad when you consider the cost of a decent lid and fitted plugs.

Not bad at all....I'm guessing that means $600 for just noise canceling....another $200 for the Bluetooth module which allows music and rider to rider comms.  Since Skully AR-1 is still vaporware, if this helmet gets good reviews I will probably buy one.

I wonder who actually makes the helmet. Probably in Taiwan or so.

Mayby another thread,  ...

I also thought about special helmets for electric motor cycles:

I love to drive through nature nearby, hearing all sounds of surrounding,  but on > 50km/h the noise of the helmet becomes too loud. Also the benefit of driving silent gives you a better notice of sounds of others and increase the safety, but there are two problems:

a) Most helmets are already reducing the sound
b) the spatial hearing is disturbed.

Once I drilled holes at the ears of my old helmet to overcome this limitations, but that increased wind noise, at some speed like a whistle. Alternative helmets with ears free are not so safe.

Noise reduction is the wrong way to go, since I want to hear more and since the noise is produced by the helmet it would be better to have a helmet with better aerodynamics -> less noise.

In the next experiment, I put some furs outside the holes like they do on microphones to reduce wind noise and it works somehow, but it looks someway funny, like ears with fur...   Maybe when I have time left next summer, I will mount my in-ears microphones outside and headphone speakers inside to control this even better... or some industry sells helmets for elctric motorcycles...

Here is an article on Revzilla about the new helmet.

FYI, according to the Sena booth guy at AIMExpo, it'll be available in standard and modular (flip-up) forms "in late spring" and be about $700

The "bandpass" of the noise filter is specially optimized to filter out wind.

Available early spring... can't wait to see some actual reviews but here is a close up at AIMEXPO.

This is one of those techs that I was shocked wasn't more prevalent when I came back to riding recently. High hopes.

Cheers

The loudest noise we face is wind noise ;) And it can vary from helmet to helmet depending on fit.

The biggest problem I see with helmets in general is fit. I don't know of any line of helmets where the vendor offers many shapes of helmets with all the same high quality features. Because of this there are a lot of people who say things like "I really wish that helmet fit my head," and instead have to settle and by an inferior helmet for their needs :(
