Blinkers not working
« on: May 02, 2015, 04:28:52 AM »

The turn signals on my 2013 XU stopped working a few days ago. The thumb switch feels normal. High beam and horn still work. The four fuses inside the box seem fine. The brake light works, just not the front or rear blinkers. The green indicator lights on the dash don't light up when I signal either. Maybe it's the blinker relay? (Can someone point it out to me?)

My 2012 S had a blinker relay that was defective when I bought the bike.  The dealer pulled a relay off of a 2011 model on the showroom floor, plugged it in and it has been working fine ever since.  So the relay could certainly be the problem.  Most likely any 12V motorcycle blinker relay will work if it connects the same way.  But if your bike is still under warranty, then your dealer should replace it.

The blinker relays that I've seen are not water proof. It's possible that water got into yours.

On the Zero powered e-trike I built the relay was not protected from rain. I couldn't figure out why I kept losing several blinker relays until I realized it was always after the trike had been soaked. I sealed the last relay I bought, using silicone seal, and haven't had a problem since.

So far I haven't experienced this on my 2013 FX but the relay is better protected than on my trike. However, this may be the cause of your relay failure. Did your bike get wet just before the blinkers quit working?

Thanks for the responses guys.

I can take it to the dealer under warranty if I can't figure it out, but I like fixing things myself and would like to save a trip if possible.

I haven't gotten the bike wet. The previous owner might have washed it before selling it to me, but that was back in the beginning of February. Can someone help me identify relay on the bike? where it's located, what it looks like, how many pins?

I haven't looked to see where mine is on my 2013 FX but I can answer the pin # question. They have three blade pins similar to a headlamp bulb. I was replacing mine with equivalent units that I was buying at an O' Riley auto parts store. There are several units that are the same size and appearance but have different pin connections. Last time I accidentally bought the wrong pin-out version so I just swapped the connections in the socket to match.

Hopefully someone with an FX can give you an equivalent answer, or confirm this one...

On my 2015 SR, the flasher is a black plastic box, about an inch cubed (looks like a relay, with several wires coming out one end), and is located in the 'wishbone' area of the frame - where the two upper frame members come together like a wishbone, just behind the steering head, and just in front of the area where my power tank sits (if you're not familiar with the power tanks, read, "in the front of the area under the 'gas tank'")

I might have a picture...

Hi guys, I wanted to give a quick update. I found the flasher, located behind the left fairing on the FX/XU.

I tried bypassing it by removing it and jumping the pins, and also tried attaching a generic 12v flasher, but neither worked. I finally brought it to the dealer yesterday, and they found that the flasher works, but there was no continuity between the flasher and the switch at the handlebar controls. So a new wiring harness is on order.

While I wait for the part to arrive, I did a temporary fix by running some wire from the flasher and splicing it into left hand controls connector of the wiring harness. (photos attached)

While digging around, I also found my headlight wires were starting to get chewed up by a zip tie keeping the wires organized. All the zip ties around the bike seemed a little tight, so it wouldn't surprise me if disconnect inside the harness was caused by a pinch at a zip tie. I'm going to go around the bike, re-zipping all the wires a little more loosely.
