free floating rotor in electric motor

The University of Vienna published a prototype of electric motor.
The rotor is fixed by magnetic bearing.
Vienna will present the prototype at the "Hannover Messe" 13. - 17. 4. 2015.
One can have doubt that the magnetic bearing withstand the tension of our toothed belt,
but i am sure development steps forward.

I would think that the load would have to be mostly axial, like direct driving a pump.

The strength of the "bearing" does not need to be even all around. For chain/belt application, some more winding on the back of the chain/belt side and the front of the opposite site may do the trick. And this strength can be modulated, and it most probably already have some form of feedback of the shaft position to adjust for the gravity.

I wonder how much additional power is "burned" up in those bearing windings?
