Charging the DS at public chargers in Europe
« on: April 22, 2015, 07:50:24 PM »

I found a Type 2 - Schuko adapter for use at public chargers. Does this work with the Zero DS?

I think you'd have to find a thick desktop workstation power cord.

Something that looks like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-International-Schucko-IEC-60320-C13/dp/B00EKC5AAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429711657&sr=8-1&keywords=schucko+c13

It will still take as long to charge as if you plugged it into a wall though.

Do not take my advice without other research.  I am not an expert.

The European public chargers have a Type 2 connecter, the whith one on the pic. These chargers do not have a regular connector. So if it works, you need an adaptor as shown on the pic. But the question is: does this work with the Zero DS?

Well, if the fact that Zero sells a J1772 to C13 connector for use with its motorcycles is any indication, I'd say so, but I'm no expert.

AFAIK, the bike should draw what it wants and it supports 220/50hz/3-phase.  Since you can plug it into a wall with a schucko plug, it should already support all of this, right?  Does the car charging station have any specs on the AC current that it provides?  If it's 220, I'd reckon that'd be OK.  If it's >220, then that's no good.

The voltage is the same as a regular outlet, but it 'talks' with the car through a data line. Renault sells a small EV, the Twizzy which supports a regular plug only, and that seems to work.

In the Netherlands, all chargers have the Type 2 Mennekes connection.

While the bikes themselves are smart, the charger interface to the grid is "dumb". As long as this particular Schuko adapter is compatible with the particular Type 2 supply equipment, any electrical device that can accept the voltage output by the supply equipment and that does not exceed the supply equipment's voltage would work.

The DS should be fine. As would a tea kettle, or a microwave.

Only if you have something inside the mennekes connector to trick the pilot signal.
A diode and resistor do the trick if I remember correctly.

I'm in contact with the guy that makes the plug, how do you want it exactly?
