FAQ?
« on: November 06, 2014, 05:02:36 PM »

This is probably a Frequently Asked Question, but is there an map URL or app to find charging stations?

I searched Google Maps and all I found was "ChargePoint" stations, even though I know there's a Walgreen's EV station down the block. What is ChargePoint? Is it a ripoff or should I join?

Is there a list of stations/systems that don't work with particular bikes? My dealer said "couple people said that GE Wattstations don't work with Zero" - but that's the sum total of my knowledge... How would I recognize one? I guess it says "GE Wattstation" on it?

And speaking of FAQs... is there one here? I couldn't find it.

CrashCash,

Defintely get the app for Plugshare. There are several sites for finding charging stations but Plugshare is by far the best. Recommend you get join Chargepoint so you can use their stations. Some Chargepoint stations are free, some aren't and some are free for a certain charging time and after that you will pay. But something I will say about Chargepoint stations is I have yet to find one that would not allow me to charge at full power. (6300 watts) But also look at what kinds of EVSE's are around you or where you want to travel to. I am not a fan of the Blink network at all but if you travel in TN they are frequently the only option. Get whatever accounts you need to go where you want to go. If you think you may need to charge at campgrounds then get the app for RV Parky. Just have the plug for a NEMA 14-50 and you have 50 amps of charging power available. Your charging speed will be the same as any J1772 plug.

On Plugshare it will often say what brand of EVSE is at a particular site. A GE Wattstation will not work with a Zero because they require authentication with your BMS. Learn what a GE Wattstation looks like and know before you go. Whole Foods have GE Wattstations at them.

I have charged successfully with Eaton, Chargepoint, Blink, Nissan, Clipper Creek, Leviton, and Aerovironment EVSEs. May be forgetting others but the GE systems are the only ones I can't charge at.

What is the charging set up on your bike?

You can't use level two charging stations with Zeros unless you have an external charger.

I use two Elcon 2500 W charger is on my 2012 Zero S and it works with every station except GE Wattstations.

With a stock bike you basically need to ride within the range of the bike.  Charging on 110V doesn't get you far.

For more range and the ability to ride greater distances you can talk to Harlan Flagg at Hollywood Electrics, and he can hook you up with a faster charging system that connects to J1772 plugs.  That's what I, and a few others, have done and it's nice to be able to ride farther even if it takes a little extra time to charge.

My family lives in Titusville, FL and I'll be visiting for the holidays.  Hopefully you'll have the bike by then and it would be fun to get together and compare notes.
