Tubeless tire plugging systems
« on: January 08, 2015, 09:40:33 PM »

This article might be of interest to someone someday: Here is a review of the Stop and Go and Dynaplug tubeless tire plugging products (both of which I have somewhere under the seats of my motorcycles).  I have used the Stop and Go plugger twice but not the Dynaplug. The review doesn't say which one is the best, only that both pluggers can work.  I might add that I have plugged something like 8 tires over the years and then ridden on them at mostly legal speeds, while lightly loaded, until the tire tread wore out and I never had a plug leak.  However most of the plugs were of the cheap car tire "steel belted" ribbon type, which work very well, but are a real bitch to install due to the ribbons usually being much larger than the hole that needs to be plugged. It takes a lot of effort and reaming to install these car tire plugs. The motorcycle-specific tire pluggers are much easier (although more complicated - you need to be able to read instructions) to install, which can be a big advantage should you need to plug a tire by the side of the road. However, they are certainly more expensive and not as easy to find at a retail store:

I've used the Dynaplug Pro on my SV-650 rear tire, and the Stop'n'Go on the FJR-1300 rear tire, both in a parking lot on the usual nail punctures. The Dynaplug was straightforward, but the Stop'n'Go wouldn't completely seal until I used 4 plugs.

They both got me 30-40 miles home, where I could take the tire off and put a permanent patch inside.

For my druthers, I'd take the Dynaplug because it's WAY smaller (about the size of a very large CO2 cartridge) than the big Stop'n'Go kit, and I had far less trouble with it.

I've also used the car-style sticky-string fix and had it come out of the RZ-350's rear tire going about 15mph through a turn. That was not fun.

Also, FWIW, I use the Best Rest Cycle Pump from http://www.bestrestproducts.com/c-10-cyclepump-ez-gauge.aspx because it's built pretty well and usually fits under a bike seat. No room for it on the Zero SR though! :)
