A Tesla motorcycle?
« on: October 02, 2014, 05:36:35 PM »

http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-d-2014-10

Many comments on twitter and facebook suggest that the "something else" might be plans/projects for a motorcycle.
It would be great for the market development, but I find it hard to believe...thoughts?

Question is more why they did not do it earlier ? There are 150 millions electric 2 wheelers in the world (mainly China), and electric 2 wheelers compared to ICE equivalent show a better financial equation than cars...

I could see a Tesla e-bike to put in the trunk of your new Tesla Model S, but not a Tesla motorcycle.  It just doesn't make marketing sense for Tesla and I have never heard that Musk is a motorcycle enthusiast who might be willing to build one just for fun instead of profit.

For reasons I can't really explain to myself, I'm hoping they don't. I really don't want a (comparatively) large manufacturer coming along and stomping on the hard work Zero and Brammo have done for years now to get where they are.

I bet Kensiko's correct, they may well be going AWD. But since Musk said "the 'D' and one other thing", we have to come up with one more. Perhaps a small trailer housing a generator to once and for all shut up the "you can't just refill it in five minutes" crowd?

I know...it's not going to happen, but...

If they could pack 200+ miles of range in a sport tourer, combined with the supercharger network, wouldn't that put them in competition with the high-end bmw segment? Selling 200-300 luxury bikes at a price tag of $40-50k would be the equivalent of the Roadster experiment.
Then, if they moved down the food chain, they would certainly stomp on Zero (and Brammo, if it keeps up), but it would be a long time before they compete in the same segment (at least Gigafactory timescale).

...just some fantasy moto-industry... :)

Never heard anyone inside of Tesla ever mention anything about making a motorcycle.

Possibly driver assist or a new roadster.  Looking forward to it.  Elon sure knows what he's doing!

I'd love to see Tesla build a motorcycle, though I suspect they would correctly view this as a diversion. It'd be interesting if instead they developed modular powertrain designs that could be adapted by existing manufacturers, similar to their partnerships with Toyota and Mercedes.

Imagine if after the Livewire tour, Harley got feedback from customers that they wanted a 200 mile cruiser. Tesla could build a 40 kWh battery / 80 kW motor / controller / charger package for well under $20k, meaning Harley could sell an electric cruiser (compatible with the SC network) for about the same price as their gas CVO motorcycles.
